Game Wrap 5/13/2011: Cubs 11 Giants 4

It's probably not too surprising that the Giants would have a letdown in a road day game following the completion of a tremendous sweep of a 6 game homestand against division rivals. This one stayed close until the 7'th when the Giants normally reliable bullpen suffered a complete collapse and the Cubs turned it into a route. Key Lines:

Andres Torres- 3 for 5, 3B, SB(2). BA= .349. Torres has been red hot since his return from the DL. We know from last year he can stay hot for a long time, although .349 is probably ripe for a regression.

Aubrey Huff- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .224. Huffy is hitting .297 over his last 10 games, so he seems to be gradually coming out of his early season slump.

Cody Ross- 1 for 4, HR(2). BA= .246. Ross is hitting .321 over his last 10 games.

Madison Bumgarner- 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 4.25. Bum walked a couple of key batters after getting them down 0-2 and it hurt him. Still, if he continues to pitch this well, gotta think the chips will start falling his way. Huh? Try telling that to Matt Cain!

Jeremy Affeldt- 0.1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 1 BB, HBP. ERA= 5.79. Although Affeldt has had a good outing here and there, he really hasn't looked right for a long time. Not sure what the problem is. He seems to have good velocity, good break on the curveball. Just very poor command more often than not. He probably needs to go to the back of the bullpen for awhile.

Dan Runzler- 1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 7.41. Runzler may not be getting regular enough work to stay sharp. I would think he goes down when Casilla comes off the DL.

The Giants played the only day game in MLB, so we don't know what effect this loss will have on their hold on first place in the NL West. For now, it drops their lead to 0.5 games. If Colorado wins, they would take first place back by percentage points.

Ryan Vogelsong tries to build on his last excellent start tomorrow soft tossing lefty Doug Davis who they know from his days with the Arizona D'Backs.

  1. Thank you very much for all the hard work you put into this. Though I watch most games, it is nice to see it from your prospective since i still have a lot to learn (this is only my 2nd season as a fan). I am also a San Jose fan and go to many of their games. It's nice to see how my favorites from last year are doing in AA.

  3. Agreed on Affeldt. The guy is not right. Hindsight being 20/20, I wish the Giants had protected Joe Patterson (Arizona Rule 5). He'll stick in that pen as the D-Backs are likely going nowhere this year, and he's the ONLY left-handed reliever. Did you see you see Patterson as a potential Rule 5 Dr. B?
