Game Wrap 5/27/2011: Giants 5 BrewCrew 4

The Giants were a team badly in need of a pick-me-up and boy, did they ever get one from Brandon Crawford who hit a grand slam home run in hs first major league game to lift the Giants to a win over the Brewers in Milwaukee. It was about a year ago when another rookie named Buster Posey took over a moribund looking Giants team into Milwaukee on the heels of a demoralizing series and literally turned the season around. Let's hope this shot in the arm by Crawford has a similar effect on the team and the season. Key Lines:

Andres Torres- 0 for 4, BB, SB(5). BA= .262. Torres is slumping, but has managed to score 6 runs in his last 10 games.

Freddy Sanchez- 2 for 4. BA= .299. Freddy has been cranking out multi-hit games

Aubrey Huff- 2 for 4. Huffy started the rally that led to Crawford's grand slam with a leadoff double in the 7'th.

Nate Schierholtz- 2 for 4. BA= .266.

Brandon Crawford- 1 for 3, BB. BA= .333. Crawford got absolutlely all of Shaun Marcum pitch with the bases loaded in the 7'th inning. It was the difference in the game. Wow! What a way to lift the Giants spirits and the spirits of Giants fans everywhere!

Tim Lincecum- 7 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 2.22. Timmy looked like he was going to be the hard luck loser like a lot of other Giants starters of late until Brandon Crawford came to the rescue.

Brian Wilson- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(14). BA= 3.38. Another little pick-me-up for the Giants. Wilson preserving a 1 run lead in the 9'th. Now THAT is a Save!

With the Win, the Giants stayed 1.5 games ahead of the Dangerous D'Backs who edged the 'Stros 7-6. The Cardinals clobbered the Reeling Rockies 10-3 to drop them 4 games off the pace. The Desperate Dodgers topped the Marlins 3-2 to remain 6.5 games behind the Giants. The Pathetic Padres lost to the Nats 2-1 to fall 8.5 games back in last place in the NL West.

Jonathan Sanchez takes the mound tomorrow afternoon against Randy Wolf to try to put another game in the Win column.

  1. Hey, love the blog.

I have to disagree. It looked to me like Crawford missed the true sweet spot on the bat, which is even more impressive that he humped it out to right center. Funniest thing I have heard in a while: Brewers announcers on mlb.tv giving viewers the details on Brandon Crawford before his GS, being pretty critical of the fact that he just came from A+ and never hit above AA before. Needless to say, they didn't have a lot to say after his salami.

Also, what a good call by Tim Flannery to hold Aubrey Huff at third, when, from what I saw, it looked like he had a chance to score on Schierholtz's single during the rally. An out would have been a devastating momentum killer there with no outs.

Overall, a good game, love to see a Giants pitcher get a W, even when they make a few mistakes.

  2. p.s. Prince Fielder's attempt to slam Whiteside was ridiculous. The Posey incident yesterday was really unfortunate, but to turn around and see Prince Fielder try to go up high today?! If Sanchez or Cain get him up with nobody on, they are going upstairs on him. Dude is a punk. Showed up Zito a few years back... Weak.

  3. timmy looked a little off but still pretty dominating

nice move by bochy to go off in an attempt to get some fire lit under the team....he shouldve done the lollygag speech from bull durham before the game

no matter what crawford does the rest of his career...his name will always be in the record books...gotta feel good for the kid

love it when local boys make good

do not dig what fielder attempted...glad that whiteside was set and got to shove that glove right in his face

think that durty needs to give the prince a little chin music tomorrow

btw, another injury from a plate collision tonite in houston

  4. Anon & Bacci -

Hit it right on the head. Prince Fielder was out by a mile and tried to ram Whiteside? They need to pull the old Bob Gibson trick - thump him up high at the plate, then drill him in the ribs when he dives back into first base on the pickoff play. See what the punk-ass thinks of that

  5. fielder did the exact same thing to greene, and destroyed his career

he was set with an elbow to go right into whitey's jaw....which...believe it or not...is legal

whiteside is a crafty vet...knew what was coming

just wish he had made the hard tag to that fat putzes face

didnt know that the brew crue announcers had dissed crawford...guess they didnt see his work during st, and didnt know that the only reason he was at sj was to rehab

guess that is why the crue have no book on the kid....dont they have scouts in all the minor leagues? i thought every team did

  6. I think Crawford got a little lucky. Loved it, don't get me wrong. Not sure how much info the Brewers had on Crawford. I mean, he spent 2 years not hitting at AA, and was now back at A+. You just don't worry about that middle infielder going yard to beat you in the majors.

I didn't think Crawford would see much playing time on the Giants at all. Shows what I know.

  7. Kelly,

Yes, a grand slam HR in your first major league game involves a lot of luck without saying. Wasn't the last guy to do that for the Giants Brian Dallimore? I don't rememember if it was his first MLB game, but it was awfully close. We all know how that turned out.

I will say that it looked like he went down and got a curveball with a pretty good 12-6 break on it. Not a hanger by any means.
