Game Wrap 5/14/2011: Giants 3 Cubs 0

The baseball gods were smiling on the Giants today as they spotted Ryan Vogelsong an early lead and he pitched shutout baseball through 6 innings before the game was called due to rain. It was an official game so the Giants and Vogelsong get credit for the win. Key Lines:

Freddy Sanchez- 1 for 3, 2B. BA= .259. Freddy had the only XBH of the game.

Buster Posey- 1 for 2, BB. BA=.256. Buster had the only RBI as the Giants were helped by 3 Cubbies errors.

Ryan Vogelsong- 6 IP, 7 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K's, W(3-0). Another dominant line from Vogelsong. He had to overcome 2 errors by Tejada at SS, but was helped by 2 DP's both of which Tejada participated in.

The Win put the Giants back in sole possession of first place in the NL West as the Reeling Rockies lost a hitfest to the Pesky Padres 9-7. The Dodgers lost to the Dangerous D'Backs 1-0 behind Jesse Collmenter as Billingsley's 1 hit 0 ER effort went to waste. The Dodgers are 3.5 games back while the D'Backs are 5.5 back and the Pads are 6 back. The Giants have won 8 of their last 10 while every other team in the NL West has losing record over the same span except the Padres who are 5-5.

Tim Lincecum takes the mound, weather permitting tomorrow trying to win the series for the Giants against Big Bad Carlos Zambrano who is 4-1 with a 4.35 ERA. There is no question that Timmy is the superior pitcher here, but can the Giants score on Big Bad Z?

  1. despite the weather and some poor d behind him...song kept his composure and threw very well

why do i have a feeling that zito's rehab is gonna take a long, long time

  2. To state the obvious, Tejada is a bigger problem than I thought. Not really seeing any hope of improvement anywhere. Yeah, it was slop today, and the Cubs definitely had their problems, but Miggy is a pretty HUGE liability out there.

Lotta love for Vogelsong. Yes, the best thing to do is let him continue until the league catches up with him (hopefully never, but likely adjustments will be made).

Can the giants waste a bullpen slot on Zito for the 6th starter, long relief, blow-out games role? I hope so. Because they are not going to release him.

  4. Before this season I had no idea Tejada would be this poor defensively. Maybe I was thinking he would still pick it like Vizquel did in his old age. One thing we do not need is to give up Wheeler for a rental player like Reyes. Plus, this team is made on good pitching. Signing a SS to a long term deal that Reyes would expect might make it hard to resign Cain or Lincecum. I would much rather trade for Stephen Drew than to give Reyes $100m +.

We need to start a petition to cut our losses with Zito. The way Vogelsong is playing makes me think we would be better off with anyone but Zito. Especially if Surkamp or Wheeler could take over in a year or two. What would be great is if the Yankees had a pitcher go down for the year and they needed a veteran for a playoff run. We could pay most of his contract and send him packing. Wishful thinking of course.

  5. I do not think he was a bad signing, he had a decent amount of upside potential, but Migg-E Teh Nada is becoming a MAJOR liability. Now that Crawford is back, any chance that he gets a shot in SF? His D alone would bake him an upgrade, and I can not imagine his bat being any worse...

  6. Are there serious rumors about Wheeler for Reyes? Wow! I hope not! Wheeler may blow out his arm tomorrow, but the Giants have a pretty good track record with pitching prospects and he's right up there with the best right now as far as I'm concerned. Reyes would be a half year rental at best. No way do I want him signed to a long term deal. Surkamp + Adrianza? I could live with that, but Wheeler is untouchable in my opinion. Heck, I'd give up Brandon Belt before I'd give up Wheeler!

  7. Bacci,

Yeah, from everything I've read and seen, I'd say DeRosa is done. Too bad. Healthy he could do a lot of things this team needs.

  8. Maybe Vizquel is available in a trade.

  9. Because this game was nationally televised, it was not cancelled due to the horrible weather. Forty thousand people suffered in the utterly miserable conditions (frigid rain and wind) because of fear of lost revenue. The players risked injury in the unsafe conditions that night. Some players say it was the worst weather they have EVER played in. The fans in attendance deserve reimbursement and an apology.
