Game Wrap 5/5/2011: Mets 5 Giants 2

I didn't get to see any of this game because I was at work, but from the looks of the box score, I didn't miss much. It must have not been a pretty sight! The offense continued to struggle, or maybe it's more accurate to say they are not struggling. Jonathan Sanchez continued to have "focus" problems which directly contributed to him losing the game. Key lines:

Mike Fontenot- 1 for 2, HR(2), 2 BB. BA= .261 Fonty is not only hitting .333 over his last 10 games, but his season OBP is a robust .370 with a SLG% of .522. Keep this guy around! I know he's not the greatest defensive SS around, but he's better than Miggy and a plus hitter at that position.

Jonathan Sanchez- 5 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 6 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 3.55. Man, that is one ugly line! It's not just the walks. Sanchez has always walked his share of batters. This marks the second game in a row where he has glaringly had a complete brain cramp in failing to execute fundamentals like covering a base or running out a sac bunt. Either his mind is a million miles away or he's dogging it. Either way, it's bad and needs to stop. I mean, as talented as he is, is this the type of pitcher you want to commit a long term contract to? Hopefully Bochy can talk to him and find out what's bugging him because something is obviously not right with his head right now.

The loss drops the Giants record to 15-16, one game under .500. The Rockies are leading their game against the D'Backs. If that holds up, it will drop the Giants 5 games off the pace of the leaders of the NL West. The Giants have now completed what might be the most difficult part of their schedule, 22 out of their first 31 games on the road. They also had to deal with the distraction of all the WS celebrations at the beginning of the season. They've also had to deal with a string of injuries to key players. All things considered, they came through all that not in terrible shape. They do need to start picking it up though. This weekend series against the Rampaging Rockies would be a good place to get it in gear.

Matt Cain will take the mound tomorrow night against Ubaldo Jimenez who has had a rocky start to the season himself, but could break out of it on any given game.

Addendum: Colorado ended up losing to the D'Backs so the Giants come home with 4 game deficit going into the 3 game series to open the homestand against the Rocks.

  1. Edit: Fontenot homered, not doubled.

  2. Tejada looked flat and bad.

Jose Reyes, regarding all the Giant fan angst to pick up this guy, there's a few things to say:

    1. Incredible talent. When healthy, he will perform, in a big way.

    2. Not the player you want on your team. Ever.

Reyes has seen plenty of Nate Schierholtz. Both this series, and over the last 4 years. Today, routine grounder from Nate to short, Reyes picks up the ball, pumps twice nonchalantly, and suddenly realizes that Nate can run. Reyes now needs to hurry the throw and overthrows Davis at first. How in the hell does Reyes NOT know that Nate is fast???

He just doesn't care. Doesn't care.

This is troubling. Tejada has worked hard. Very hard. And he seems to simply not be up to the task. Pressure will mount to replace him. I sincerely hope the Giants do not give up ANYTHING to rent this cancer (Reyes) for 3 months. They can't afford him after that, as a free agent.

Burriss can't hit either. I don't understand his approach. His butt is always leaving the box when he's hitting. Very off balance.

So, I don't have a solution at short. But no Reyes, ever, ever, ever. Ever.

  3. something is wrong with drrty...and im not talking physical or mechanics

even early in his career, he was good for 2-3 innings before he lost it

there is something else going on...he is distracted...like he doesnt want to be on the mound or in a uni...that worries me, because this guy has always been a fierce competitor

reyes needs a change of scenery...says that the trade talk doesnt bother him, but i think that is bs

but i dont think bowtie is gonna allow sabean to give up the farm for a rental...nor do i believe that the giants are gonna be able to afford a long term with him

miggs made a great play at third....then, with bases juiced and one out...while he had a good at bat...he blew it....cuz im sorry, k-rod just doesnt have it anymore

with all the injuries, the slumps, the brain farts on the field, the bad outings by the staff....that the giants are playing 500 ball...is amazinge

and it is the say hey kid's bday...so everything is right with the world

  4. I agree with Kelly - no way would Reyes be worth what we'd have to give up. And with uncertain free agent compensation after this year, even hoping for draft picks if we lost him wouldn't be all that attractive.

I've been a firm believer in trading JSanchez; unfortunately, right now his stock would be so low that we wouldn't get anything back. We can hope for him to rebound this season, but I'd certainly explore a trade this winter.

  5. Right now, I'm all in favor of just leaving Fonty at short. Not a perfect solution, but the best one reasonably available. I'm not a huge fan of Reyes, but I'd take him on a rental as long as Wheeler, Belt or Brown were not part of the deal.
