Down on the Farm: 4/29/2011

AAA Fresno's game with Salt Lake City got postponed.

AA Bowie Baysox topped the Richmond Flying Squirrels 8-7:

Justin Christian(DH)- 2 for 4, HR(1), HBP. BA= .280.
Nick Noonan(SS)- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB. BA= .265.
Charlie Culberson(2B)- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .306.
Roger Kieschnick(RF)- 1 for 3, BB, 2 SB(3). BA= .224.
Mike McBryde(CF)- 1 for 3, 3B, SF. BA= .243.
Clayton Tanner(LHP)- 5 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 5.85.

Noonan has an OBP of .375 but the double was his first XBH of the season. Tanner's numbers are consistently unexciting.

A+ San Jose Giants stomped the Lake Elsinore Storm 9-3:

Gary Brown(CF)- 2 for 2, 2B, 3 BB. BA= .341.
Nick Liles(3B)- 3 for 5. BA= .379.
Tommy Joseph(1B)- 2 for 5. BA= .271.
Chris Dominguez(DH)- 0 for 4, 4 K's. BA= .267.
James Simmons(RF)- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .364.
Wendell Fairley(LF)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .317.
Jake Dunning(RHP)- 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 4.71.
Ari Ronick(LHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.
Rico Noel(LF-CF, Storm)- 1 for 4, 3B. BA= .215.

Brown's OBP is .429. Dominguez has gone into one of his epic slumps. Ciriaco pinch-hit for him in this one which tells you how bad he must have looked out there. Ari Ronick makes his first appearance after a layoff of almost exactly 1 year. Presumabley TJ surgery? I was a big fan of Rico Noel before last year's draft and wondered if the Padres got pretty much the same player as Gary Brown only in the 5'th round. Apparently not! Kudos to the Giants scouting department once again!

Low A Hickory Crawdads downed the Augusta Greenjackets 8-3:

Dan Burkhart(C)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .242.
Chris Lofton(CF)- 1 for 2, 2B, S. BA= .179.
Shawn Sanford(RHP)- 4.2 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.29.
Edward Concepcion(RHP)- 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.31.

Concepcion continues to pitch much better out of the bullpen than he did as a starter. Sanford had been pitching well, but got torched in this one.

There's an awesome video of Richmond Flying Squirrels manager Dave Machemer getting tossed from a game and completely losing it. Baggs has the link at the bottom of his Extra Baggs column from last night. You can link to Extra Baggs over on the lefthand side of this blog.

  1. Still WAY early, but expectations for first batch of promotions?

    Brown A+ - AA
Fairley A+ - AA (nice to see that he may actually be developing)
    Cavan A+ - AA
Culberson - AA - AAA (could spell the end for Bond in the organization)
    Wiiloughby - A- - A+

I left Liles and Anders off, although I suppose we could expect one of them to make the jump. I also did not include any pitchers because without seeing them pitch, you really can not evaluate them. Pitchers numbers in the minors are next to meaningless.

  2. BTW, Noonan had a hit in every game, since his return. This may be a good sign, despite, as you pointed, lack of XBH and multiple hit games.

  3. As badly as the Giants need a leadoff hitter with some speed. I'd very much like to see a mid-season promo for Brown. With Freddy Sanchez signed through next year, I could see them taking it slow with Culberson and letting the AA experience really soak in. I think they have to fish or cut bait with Fairley. If he can keep his BA above .300 by June 1, they need to see what he can do in AA.

As far as pitchers go, if Matt Cain got a mid-season promo to AA his second full professional season. If Wheeler continues to show dominant stuff, I could see him moving up although they can probably afford to take it slow with him too.

  4. Speaking of prospects, now that Sandoval has broken his hand, will we see Miggy move to 3B and who is going to play SS? Burriss?

  5. Losing Sandoval is a big blow, especially since DeRosa is also on the DL. Personally, I would like to see Burriss get a few consecutive starts at SS to see what he can do. The Giants desperately could use his speed at the top of the order. He seems to have fumble fingers in the field, but has to have more range than either Miggy or Fontenot. Miggy is kind of a black hole offensively at 3B compared to Pablo. Really really tough break for the Giants which could threaten their ability to get back to the playoffs.

I wonder when the injury occured? Was it when he made that sprawling tag a few games ago?

  6. It may have happened during the double steal, when Rowand stole home.
