Game Wrap 4/1/2011: Dodgers 4 Giants 3

The Giants got bitten by another case of the Fumble Fingers spoiling Brandon Belt's first MLB HR as the Dodgers won their second consecutive game over the Giants to open the 2011 season. Key Lines:

Buster Posey- 1 for 4. Buster did not have a good game as he killed off a first inning rally with a GIDP with runners at first and third, one out. Later, he swung and missed badly at a 3-2 fastball, that's right, a fastball, and lost his bat up into the stands appearing to injure a spectator in the process. He did single to get on base ahead of Brandon Belt's 3 run dinger though.

Brandon Belt!- 1 for 4, HR(1). Chad Billingsley had not allowed a HR in 9 consecutive starts prior to this one and is generally very tough on the Giants. Belt took him deep to dead center in Dodger Stadium, no small feat at all. He also hit two other balls on the nose but right at fielders.

Jonathan Sanchez- 5.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 8 K's. Typical game for Sanchez. Great looking stuff early on. Got himself in trouble with walks. Gave up some dunker hits that seemed to have seeing eyes. If you have him on your fantasy team, the K's are nice but he kills your WHIP line. He was ultimately done in by his own fielding error on a comebacker that could have gotten him out of the inning.

Dan Runzler- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K's. Runzler looks like he's learned to trust his stuff and pitch to contact. He was overpowering tonight even without the K's.

The loss drops the Giants to 0-2. Matt Cain tries to right the ship tomorrow against Ted Lilly. Cainer had not won a game at Dodger Stadium until late last year. We'll see if he can keep it going tomorrow afternoon.

Freddy Sanchez signed a 1 year $6M contract extension for 2012. If Charlie Culberson keeps coming on like Gangbusters, Sanchez' contract should be very tradeable, so it's a low risk deal.

Barry Zito seemed to be better from his motor vehicle accident. He threw off flat ground and seemed to have no problems after undergoing therapy on his neck.

Marc Kroon accepted an assignment to Fresno where he will be the closer and a quick call away from the SF bullpen. Nice to know he's still in the organization. I have a feeling he is going to play an important role before the season is over.

Police are looking for 2 suspects who attacked a party of 3 Giants fans outside Dodger Stadium after last night's game. One victim went to the hospital with a head injury and is listed in critical but stable condition. He is expected to recover. Dodger Stadium can get a bit scary at times. I tend to stay away if I'm getting any bad vibes at all. Giants fans flying a plane with a banner over Dodger Stadium taunting Dodger fans was one such situation. My daughter wanted to go to a game this weekend. I'm working anyway, but I told her I didn't like the vibe and thought it might be unsafe to go.

I was a bit surprised at some of the names the Giants released as announced on baseballamerica.com: Brian Anderson, Ben Wilshire, Wes Hobson, Juan Martinez, Jonathan DeBerry and Carlton Salters. BJ Salsbury was placed on the suspended list. I had Hobson and Salters on my Honorable Mention list of top Giants prospects.

The SJ Giants open their season in Lake Elsinore for a 4 games series starting Thursday night, April 7. I am definitely going to try to make at least one game. If Zach Wheeler is on the SJ roster, I will try to figure out when he is starting and go to that game.

  1. doc,

if someone is in critical condition, has been placed in a medical coma, and may be facing brain surgery...isnt that life threatening?

i hope he, his family and the buddies he was with (one of whom is desert daves grandson) sue the pants off of the bums org...win half a bil, own the dodgers and move the whole show to downtown tj...where it belongs

cannot blame the attack on the banners...its just an excuse

just like the crazies in afghanasistan running around chopping off heads are using the excuse of a koran burning

the two assailants are animals and should be put to sleep

durty was fine....two nights in a row our starters have to fight not only the opposing team, but their defense...although i didnt get durty's brain fart looking at the guy on third with 2 outs.

    hey...its early

but as this team doesnt seem to be prepared mentally...i blame bochy...therefore for the first (but not last time this season)

    FIRE BOCHY

    thank you

  2. Seems like the 2 games have been so tense.

Nate gets that blooper in the first inning in front of Huff. Just stating an opinion.

DeRosa stood there and looked at 3 called strikes. Truth - not being critical.

I know Pablo made a throwing error but it wasn't because he wasn't playing hard

Jonathon looked good enough to win.

    Slump early and soar later...

Starting out like last year - hope it ends up like last year.

  3. Hey, on a bright note, Brandon Belt is on pace to hit 81 homeruns and drive in 243. Those would be some kind of rookie records if i'm not mistaken...

  4. Bacci,

I don't know the details of the condition of the victim with the head trauma. I was just going from a news release I read. I believe that anyone who is in a Critical Care unit(ICU) is generally described as being in critical condition. Otherwise, why would they be in Critical Care? You will generally find a wide range of severity of illness or condition in a Critical Care unit. Sometimes they are there just so they can be monitored closely. I'll look around and see if I can find out more info. Yes, if he is being sedated and has a lesion that might require surgery, that would seem to be life-threatening. Those details were not included in the report I read.

    Opshuns,

Yes, I thought a better defensive OF probably would have had the blooper in the first. In that case, it was no harm, no foul I guess.

The Giants seem like maybe they are feeling a bit of extra pressure that a World Series championship brings. I think they'll be OK once they get that first W under their belts. Let's hope that comes before they get back to SF.

  5. I'm not blaming the attack on the plane banners, nor excusing it. I'm just saying that Dodger Stadium seems to attract an element that is a little more prone to violence these days and sometimes the mood around there is more hostile than others.

I was at the game the night the Giants fan was stabbed in the parking lot and I can tell you the mood in the entire stadium was much more rowdy than usual that night.

While you can't blame the attack, or excuse it on the banners, I do think that kind of stuff tends to tip the atmosphere there in a more dangerous direction. I posted that on the sfgiants.com Message Board after I found out about the plans for it in the offseason and I told my daughters that if we went to opening weekend at all, we should leave our Giants gear at home.

  6. OK, just read the story about the dude with the head trauma linked on Extra Baggs. Yeah, that doesn't sound too good. That's hanging in the balance kind of stuff. The sad part is, if he lives, but is permanently disabled, the assailants, if convicted, will get only a fraction of the penalty they would if he died. What happens once the trauma occurs is pure luck. The act was the same. Uh oh! I'm drifting into politics now. Gotta cut that out!
