Down on the Farm: 4/12/2011

AAA Fresno Grizzlies trounced the Tacoma Rainiers 10-2:

Emmanuel Burriss- 3 for 6, 2 2B, SB(11). BA= .261.
Tyler Graham- 3 for 5, SB(3). BA= .333.
Tyler Pill- 4 for 4, 2B, HR(2), SF. BA= .560.
Conor Gillaspie- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .280.
Edgar Gonzalez- 2 for 4, HR(1). BA= .375.
Ryan Vogelsong- 5.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 8 K's. ERA= 1.59.
David Mixon- 3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.68.

Burriss seems to be getting his confidence back. Maybe all the SB's are helping with that? Second strong K start for Vogelsong in a row.

AA Richmond topped the Bowie Baysox 7-2:

Charlie Culberson- 1 for 3, 2B, SF. BA= .333.
Justin Christian- 1 for 3, 2B, SF. BA= .273.
Thomas Vessella- 6 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.00.

Nice start to the season for Culberson. Vessella is a big lefty MILB veteran.

A+ Lancaster scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 8'th inning to beat the San Jose Giants 8-5:

Gary Brown- 2 for 3, 2 BB, SB(7). BA= .292.
Nick Liles- 1 for 3, 2 BB. BA= .455.
Tommy Joseph- 1 for 4, HR(2). BA= .423.
Luke Anders- 1 for 3, HR(2), BB. BA= .360.
Michael Main- 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K's
Jose Casilla- 0.2 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 0 K's

Much better game from Brown tonight. He seems to be getting his share of BB's. Joseph's dinger was a grand slam special. Encouraging start from Michael Main. I think Casilla is showing his pitches before he delivers them.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets got the best of the Rome Braves 5-3:

Carlos Willoughby- 1 for 4, BB. BA= .190.
Adam Duvall- 2 for 5, HR(2). BA= .240.
Josh Mazzola- 3 for 4, HR(3), BB. BA= .250.
Justin Schumer- 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, GO/AO= 16/2.
Jacob Dunnington- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.
Drew Bowlin- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, Save(1).

Wow! The Braves batters killed a lot of worms tonight off Schumer! Like the K's from Dunnington.

  1. pill...is he a aaaa player? trade bait? he is definitey zoned in this season

voglesong is making a statement....zito better steup up

i think the giants have set richmond up the way they used to set sj up...i think that for the sake of keeping the giants affiliation, they want to put a winner on that field...richmond draws well...they have made some improvements in the park...and its not as bad a place for hitters to be, as was the dodd

if casilla is tipping his pitches...that should be ez to fix....right? i try not to pay much attention to stats at lancaster...when the wind is going...everything goes out of that park...nice park though

looks like ross is gonna get one rehab game...should be monday or tuesday as he is doing extended this weekend

  2. About Gary Brown's perceived lack of plate discipline seen in minimal walk numbers in college... I really think that observation is moot in his case. When you have a slap hitter with ridiculous speed in college baseball who hits .400+ at any given time, why would he WANT to take pitches? If he is able to hit at such a high clip (which he was then), he didn't need to take walks, he needed to swing the bat!

Just don't think it makes for a realistic scenario. If he is unable to walk in A+ and AA this year, maybe we have a problem, but so far he seems to have discipline up there.

  3. That's the problem as I see regarding Brown: most of the analysts looked at his 2010 season and assumed that it was representative of the way he is capable of hitting. Looking at his freshman and sophomore seasons (including Cape Cod), one can see that when he's not that good a hitter in a league, he works counts to get his share of walks so that he can utilize his best skill - speed - in stealing bases.

As Anon noted (and I said when he was drafted), if you can hit like that, why take walks? In fact, I compared the linear weights of 5 PA of his 2010 season vs. 5 walks and found that he produced more run value by hitting his way than taking the 5 walks that everyone was criticizing him for. He apparently intuitively understood the tradeoff and make the correct decision to swing away more than take pitches to work walks.

I remain very excited about Brown's potential.

Burriss looks like he wants to be one of our uber-utility guys on the bench in 2012.

Tyler Pill? I think it's Brett Pill, Tyler is Brett's brother, think. In any case, he's been a borderline OK prospect based on his minor's stats, but had a down year in 2010. If he can continue hitting like this, he could gain a bench role on the Giants in 2012, assuming the Giants lose Ishikawa at some point and that he can play a corner OF position.

  4. My understanding is that Pill is AT LEAST Ishi's equivalent with the glove, and he would be cheaper as well with an at least close bat.

I like Ishi, but I am not sure why he is back.

  5. Brett? Tyler? Back in my day guys were Bill, Jim, John, Tom, etc. Anyway, I can't seem to keep Brett and Tyler straight. Tyler is a very good 2 way player for Cal State Fullerton, also Brett's alma mater. The Giants seem to like to draft and sign relatives of people already in the organization. Don't be surprised if Tyler ends up somewhere in the their list of drafted players in June.
