Down on the Farm: 4/16/2011

AAA Las Vegas 51's blanked the Fresno Grizzlies 7-0:

Andrew Kown(LHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.27.
Mike MacDonald(RHP, Las Vegas)- 9 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.

If MacDonald's name seems familiar, maybe it's because he pitched for the Richmond Flying Squirrels last year. He's a 29 year old minor league veteran, but seems to be thriving in a tough place/league to pitch.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels vs Akron Aeros postponed due to rain.

A+ San Jose Giants defeated the Visalia Rawhide 5-2:

Carter Jurica(SS)- 1 for 3, 2B, BB, HBP. BA= .226
Tommy Joseph(C)- 2 for 4. BA= .341.
Chris Dominguez(3B)- 3 for 4, SB(2). BA= .372.
Nick Liles(1B-RF)- 2 for 4. BA= .462.
Wendell Fairley(DH)- 2 for 4. BA= .353.
Zack Wheeler(RHP)- 5.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 8 K's, GO/AO= 6-2. ERA= 1.69.
Chris Wilson(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(1). ERA= 3.00.

Jurica's bat seems to have come alive with the move up in the order to #2. Gary Brown came out of this game early, not sure why. Love that Chris Dominguez keeps showing he is more than an all-or-nothing power hitter. Zack Wheeler once again demonstrated the ability to get both K's and GB's, a special combination for a pitcher this young.

Low A Augusta Grizzlies lost to the West Virginia Power 8-5:

Carlos Willoughby(2B)- 2 for 5, 3B, SB(2). BA= .250.
Devin Harris(LF)- 1 for 3, HR(3), BB. BA= .171.
Jeff Arnold(C)- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .269.
Edwin Escobar(LHP)- 3 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 22.50.
Matt Graham(RHP)- 4 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 8/3. ERA= 3.00.
Jacob Dunnington(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.

As bad as Escobar's outing was, the silver lining is another pretty darn good performance by Matt Graham who has been pounding the strike zone and getting the GB outs.

Addendum: Gary Brown was ejected for arguing balls and strikes at home plate. OMG! Go to sjgiants.com and look at Wheeler's pic on the game story. He looks so much like Matt Cain I thought it WAS Matt Cain in the picture at first!

  1. Looks like Gary brown was ejected for arguing balls and strikes.

Notes: The Giants had 36 hits in the final two games of the series - both wins ... Wheeler has a 1.69 ERA in his first two starts with just four hits allowed over 10 2/3 innings ... Liles singled in the bottom of the second for his sixth consecutive hit dating back to his 5-for-5 performance on Friday ... The streak ended when popped out to end the bottom of the third ... Gary Brown was ejected by home plate umpire Aaron Larsen after his second inning strikeout for arguing balls and strikes.

  2. DrB, do you know what happens if/when Vogelsong is returned back to the minors when/if Zito returns? He should not have any options left, would he have to go through waivers? I like him and he wants to stay with the Giants, hopefully he can just accept the assignment instead of having to go through waivers, as I can see some other team picking him up.

  3. No OGC, I do not know those rules. Seems like there are going to have to be some trades made or else some players just let go as people come off the DL. Of course, others may go on and keep the carousel going.

  4. Remember that Waldis rejected the White Sox' claim of him so he could return to Fresno. I still do not know how that could happen, but there you go...
