Here's the rest of the Giants organizational MILB games. See previous post for the summary of the San Jose Giants game.
Fresno Grizzlies downed the Las Vegas 51's 8-5:
Darren Ford- 2 for 4, BB, 3 SB(4).
Brett Pill- 3 for 5, HR(1), SB(1).
Conor Gillaspie- 2 for 4, HR(1), BB
Terry Evans- 3 for 4, BB, 3 SB(4).
Chris Stewart- 0 for 1, 3 BB.
Doug Mathis- 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 1 K.
Alex Hinshaw- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.
Marc Kroon- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K, Save(1).
The Grizzlies had a total of 9 SB's. Yeah, it's great. First of all, you have to have the personnel for it and secondly, you're not going to get away with that kind of stuff in the majors for very long. The big boys will find a way to shut it down real quick. I wouldn't mind having Ford on the team just as a pinch runner though. Lot's of career minor league types on the Fresno pitching staff.
New Britain Rock Cats blanked the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-0:
Single hits by Culberson, Kieschnick, Christian and Lowenstein. No BB's.
Clayton Tanner- 5 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.
Dan Otero- 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.
Justin Dowdy- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.
Tanner's K's and BB's looked better than usual but the results weren't so good. The staff combined for a 12/2 K/BB.
Greenville Drive outhit the Augusta Greenjackets 10-7:
Adam Duvall- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .250.
Dan Burkhart- 1 for 2, 2 BB. BA= .200.
Rafael Rodriguez- 2 for 4. BA= .375.
Devin Harris- 1 for 4, HR(1). BA= .154.
Edwin Escobar- 1 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K.
Matt Graham- 2.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 1 K.
Gaspar Santiago- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.
Jacob Dunnington- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K's.
Bryce Brentz(Greenville)- 2 for 5. BA= .500.
Great to see RafRod off to a good start. The Greenjackets committed 5 errors. The pitching wasn't great, but it must be tough to pitch in that kind of environment. Let's tighten up the defense there, boys! Brentz was an intriguing and somewhat controversial draft prospect last year out of Middle Tennessee State. He had a great opening weekend against the Greenjackets with 9 hits in 18 AB' with a double, 2 triples and a HR. Looks like Boston did well in the draft with him and Ranaudo. Neither should stay in low A for very long though.

correction...10 sbs....franchise record, just shy of the 13 set by the seals and the oaks, back in the day
ReplyDeletei think that decker wants to go for the pcl record
9, 10, whatever. It's great that Decker wants to go for the record. I don't think that's necessarily anything to brag about, or necessarily good managing. I does get you noticed maybe.
ReplyDeleteA healthy Burriss and Ford could be the most exciting (non-hitting) top of the order in baseball.
ReplyDeleteMy practical side knows letting loose on the bases is marginal at best in adding runs, but it's fun to watch and I hope they keep it up.
Yes, good to see RafRod off to a good start. I have high hopes for him, he's reaching the age where he needs to start showing more to keep his status.
ReplyDeleteBrentz was a name that popped up a few times when I was looking at the mock drafts for who might fall to the Giants. Yeah, both looks very good so far.
I like the idea of a Ford or Burriss as a leadoff. Anytime you can get the opposing thinking more than necessay while pitching to the 2-3-4-5 hitters,it has to be good. But I don't see Bochy much for base-to-base tactics, but then again, I think I saw Pablo and Nate running already. I think Burrell could make repeating to the wonderland easy by having a career year in homers. My prayers are for Huff out there in the pasture.
ReplyDeletedoc,
ReplyDeletehow many honest to god prospects are ever in fresno?
decker has three jobs...keep guys ready to fill a role on the big club, tweak some of the real prospects skills, and win games while be entertaining
he has been successful at all three
he doesnt have a team that hits for power...but they have speed and the ability to run....so he uses it
nothing to be ashamed of
Hey, thanks for all the comments again guys. Is this the most stimulating discussion about Giants baseball you can find, or what?
ReplyDeleteIf you can get a couple of guys at the top of the order who have high OBP's and can both steal you 40+ bases, hey, I have no problem with that at all. What I'm less excited about is just sending everybody in the lineup every time they get on base because minor league pitchers are terrible at holding runners and the catchers all have crappy throwdown times. Yeah, it's OK if you are into the minor league entertainment thing, but don't get the idea that it's somehow going to translate to the major leagues.
As for Bochy, I think his caution about running is more of a function of what skill sets he has at his disposal. How many current Giants players do you really want trying to steal a lot of bases? There has been more than one occasion when Bochy had the right player available, he's sent him in as a pinch runner for the express purpose of stealing a base. I remember when he sent Eugenio Velez in one night and Velez didn't even try to steal and got a pretty stiff lecture from the coaches for it. Then there was Darren Ford's mad dash last year that might have saved the season, and Bochy's experiements with Ford as a pinch runner in spring training this year. I'm guessing Ol' Boch has that filed away in that huge melon of his for future reference.
Doc, speaking of speed, wouldn't it be fair to say that there is a huge dependency on Brown taking over in CF in a couple of years? Torres can't stay speedy forever, and I don't think we want to re-sign Rowand when his contract ends. Unless Ford really establishes an all-around skill set this year, I think the Giants are really going to be stuck for a good leadoff hitter (which is something that all the really good teams have had).
ReplyDeleteI think when the Giants drafted Brown they saw him as the future CF/leadoff hitter. I'm not going to write him off based on one game that I've seen. I think he is still the most likely to play both roles in the future.
