Down on the Farm: 4/14/2011

AAA Fresno Grizzlies edged the Tacoma Rainiers 3-2 in 10 innings:

Darren Ford- 2 for 5, 2B, SB(7). BA= .323.
Conor Gillaspie- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .303.
Emmanuel Burriss- 1 for 1, BB, SB(13). BA= .286.
Matt Yourkin- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 9 K's.
Steve Edlefsen- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 3/0.
Marc Kroon- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's, W(1-0).

Good chance we'll see both Kroon and Edlefsen in SF this year.

AA Altoona Curve blanked the Richmond Flying Squirrels 2-0:

Eric Surkamp- 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K's ERA= 2.00.

The Squirrels managed just 3 hits.

A+ Visalia Rawhide topped the San Jose Giants 3-2:

Gary Brown- 1 for 4, SB(10), Assist(Home). BA= .273.
Tommy Joseph- 1 for 4, 2B. BA= .343.
Chris Dominguez- 2 for 4. BA= .324.
Chris Heston- 5 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 3.60.
Andy Reichard- 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.

I am especially encouraged by Chris Dominguez continued ability to get basehits of the non-HR variety. Nice K/BB for Heston.

Low A Rome Braves beat the Augusta Greenjackets 4-2:

Devin Harris- 1 for 4, HR(2). BA= .172.
Seth Rosin- 5.1 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 0 K's.
Edward Concepcion- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 2.25.
Stephen Harrold- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.00.

Rosin was hittable in his season debut. Concepcion continues to pitch well out of the bullpen.

  1. I really think that Chris Dominguez has what it takes to make the MLB roster some day. The only thing is that he will be blocked by Pablo Sandoval. I do not know anything about his range but it would be great if we can convert him into a 2B or SS. At 2B, he could be a Dan Uggla type. It would be a shame if he never made it because of being blocked. If he continues to hit and with power, I doubt Cavan or Culberson could give him any competition if he could play 2B. Any thoughts?

  2. Chris Dominguez is huge! I just don't see him ever being nimble enough to play 2B or SS. I don't think Pablo is going to block 3B forever. If he produces, he's going to get expensive and if he doesn't, well.... Pablo is not the type of player I would be comfortable giving a big long term contract to.

  3. I'm hearing bad reviews, again, of Dominguez's defense. Now I wonder if he'd make a decent RF. Any thoughts on his defense?

  4. Dominguez has had 5 K's in 12 AB's since I opened my big mouth as to how nice he was doing without the K's. Joseph, not to be outdone has 6 K;s in 13 AB's and same with my big mouth. God, when will I learn?

I wouldn't mind the Giants locking up Pablo for a long time as long as they had a "Fat-butt clause" in the contract. I think everyone's underestimating his defense at 3B. They just have to keep him motivated, just like any player. Pistol whipping might work in a pinch. lol.

  5. Power hitters have always K'd a lot. I'm not too worried about Dominguez' and Joseph's K's.

  6. Strikeouts are bearable if they are producing. Hell, I would take Mark Reynolds numbers from 2009 any day of the week.

    His numbers from 2009:
    K's 223
    HR's 44
    RBI's 102
    AVG .260
    SB 24

  7. Opshun's: Players who need to be kept motivated are exactly the ones you don't want to be giving out long term contracts to. Pay them more per year, if necessary, but keep them playing for the next contract.

  8. interesting note about last nite's fresno game

after ford hit a double, decker had travis bunt

travis was the best ph on the giants last season, but he doesnt seem to have the eye or the bat this year

kroon k'ing 4 out of the 8 guys he faced is huge

  9. oh...and suppan accepted a minor league contract with kc a couple weeks back...in case anyone was interested

  10. I guess Supp thinks he has a better chance to get a callup with KC than with the Giants? Look out Supp, KC is loaded with young arms!

  11. I was surprised with that signing as well. They even made it seem when he signed that he was not the #6 starter, but rather an escape valve in case their young guns were not ready if needed.

    Real puzzling, IMHO.

  12. he wouldve had no shot to get into the giants rotation, but the giants org has some of the best pitching coaches...and the guru

he wouldve gotten into the fresno rotation, and most likely would have been used for a midseason trade

i was reading the kc blogs...and he doesnt have a chance in hades of making the kc rotation....maybe, long man/spot starter...but much later in the season
