Down on the Farm: 4/23/2011

AAA Reno Aces downed the Fresno Grizzlies 9-2:

Brandon Belt(LF)- 1 for 3, HR(1), BB. BA= .333.
Shane Loux(RHP)- 7 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.76.
Cody Ransom(3B, Aces)- 1 for 4, 2B. BA= .294.

Yeah, THAT Cody Ransom! Brandon Belt hit a dinger in his first AAA appearance after being sent down. He also played LF, so he's apparently working on more than just handling he inside slider or cutter.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels outlasted the Altoona Curve 3-2 in 11 innings:

Justin Christian(LF)- 3 for 5, SB(3). BA= .291.
Ryan Verdugo(LHP)- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 1.65.

Verdugo has probably passed Clayton Tanner on the organization depth chart.

A+: San Jose Giants pounded the Visalia Rawhide 10-3:

Gary Brown(CF)- 3 for 5, HR(1), HBP. BA= .361.
Nick Liles(DH)- 3 for 6, 2 2B. BA= .375.
Hector Sanchez(C)- 2 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .270.
Tommy Joseph(1B)- 2 for 5. BA= .292.
James Simmons(RF)- 1 for 3, HR(1). BA= .333.
Jake Dunning(RHP)- 6 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 5.63.
Jose Valdez(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 1.29.

Brown is red hot. Dominguez and Joseph have cooled off a bit. Dunning gave up 3 runs in the first inning then really settled down.

Low A Delmarva Shorebirds defeated the Augusta Greenjackets 6-1:

Carlos Willoughby(2B)- 0 for 2, 2 BB. BA= .292, OBP= .410.
Rafael Rodriguez(RF)- 1 for 3, BB. BA= .293.
Taylor Rogers(RHP)- 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 8 K's, GO/AO= 9/2. ERA= 4.20.
Jacob Dunnington(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.00.
Edward Concepcion(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 1.00.

Not much to comment on here. Would love to have a high OBP guy with SB capabilities at the top of the Giants lineup. Actually, I'd like to have 2 or 3 of those at the top of the Giants lineup! Maybe a future top 3 of Brown, Willoughby and Belt might meet that need?

  1. The Giants do have quite a few legit speed guys in the system. I am a bit surprised it took 10 years in AT&T for the Giants to start going this direction.

Willoughby is already 22, so I want him to end the season in SJ and see if he begins to shine. Not the end of the world if stays in Augusta, but he is not in the same boat as RafRod.

I like what I see from RafRod. He still isn't showing the power, but I am OK with him holding off on that for a couple more years. Although I think he CAN make the move, I have no problem with him staying in Augusta all year, regardless of production.

I need to ask you a favor, Doc. Keep my excitement for Brown to a minimum. This kid is looking scarey. I would prefer he hits doubles instead of homeruns, though. The occasional HR can mess with a speed-demon's head.

Although I LOVE Belt's defense at 1B, if he can become a league avg defensive RF, he would be a MUCH better asset to the team (and maybe save ToJo a spot in the org)

Great writeup, as usual. Thanks for the obsession you have so I can feed mine.

  3. Belt went down in the zone to get that HR. It looked like a slider, down, but over the plate. No doubt about it off the bat. Nice to see him start out that way.

Yeah, the Grizzly outfield had both Belt and Ishikawa (in RF). How blocked does Ishikawa feel?

Cals, I want to share your enthusiasm about Brown. Aside from his speed, I'm not sold yet. Like to see how he does in Richmond. So many guys tear up San Jose, hit AA, and are never heard from again.
