Down on the Farm: 4/17/2011

AAA Las Vegas 51's edged the Fresno Grizzlies 4-3:

Emmanuel Burriss(SS)- 2 for 4, 2B, CS(2). BA= .308.
Cody Ross(RF)- 2 for 3. BA= .667.
Brett Pill(1B)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .455.

Burriss has been impressive at the plate. Looks like PCL teams are getting wise to the Run and Gun. Cody Ross makes his rehab debut.

AA Altoona Curve topped the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-1:

Clayton Tanner(LHP)- 4 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K's, 2 WP, HBP,GO/AO= 6-1. ERA= 7.00.

Not much to see here. Tanner's soft-tossing groundball game won't work as long has he has control issues and he's had plenty of time to address them. Gotta wonder if it's ever going to happen for him now. He's repeating AA after spending 2 years at High A.

A+ San Jose Giants defeated the Inland Empire 66'ers 7-3:

Gary Brown(CF)- 1 for 3, BB, HBP, CS(4). BA= .318 OBP= .434.
Ryan Cavan(2B)- 3 for 5, 2 2B, SB(4). BA= .205.
Tommy Joseph(1B)- 1 for 3, BB, SB(1). BA= .340.
Chris Dominguez(DH)- 1 for 4, 2B. BA= .362.
Nick Liles(3B)- 2 for 4, 3B, SB(2). BA= .467.
Jake Dunning(RHP)- 5 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 6.30.
Heath Hembree- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 2.25.

One of the better early stories Down on the Farm is Brown drawing walks and getting on base, a lot. Tommy Joseph stealing must have been a site, somewhat akin to the triple he hit the other day. Man, that kid is BIG! NIck Liles seems to be prepping for a super-utility role. That ought to win him some love from Bruce Bochy. Dunning had a much better result than his first start. Hembree has huge velocity.

Low A West Virginia Power blanked the Augusta Greenjackets 7-0:

Carlos Willoughby(2B)- 1 for 4, 2B. BA= .250
Taylor Rogers(RHP)- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 5.00.
Edward Concepcion(RHP)- 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 1.50.
Colton Cain(LHP, WV)- 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 0.00.

Colton Cain is a guy really liked in the 2009 draft. At 6'3", 225 lbs, he's built and looks a lot like a lefthanded version of Matt Cain. He was drafted in the 8'th round by Pittsburgh and is looking good so far.

  1. I wonder when Brown might get called up to Richmond. I'd like to see him draw walks against higher level pitchers.

Parker profiles well for Center Field right? I'd be nice to have both Parker and Brown getting maximum starts in Center.

As for Wendell - he seems to be getting off to a nice start this year. Can he "still" play center? I'd be a shame if he doesn't get a chance there because two other high draft picks are blocking the position. I still have my fingers crossed that his play catches up to the promise the Giants saw when they drafted him.

  2. Oh, and I am excited for Tommy Joseph. San Jose looks stacked.

  3. I don't see Brown getting a callup until mid-season at the earliest. I think Parker could play CF too. Not sure where Fairley fits into the overall scheme at this point. He's playing exclusively LF and really doesn't hit enough for that position.

  4. Any reports on Liles? He is making Posey and Belt look like schmoes so far this year. Any chance he is legit? He was barely on my radar last year...

  5. Yeah, I think Liles is a sleeper. I saw him at Lake Elsinore. He's bigger than I had imagined. Quite athletic looking. He's got some speed and seems to have a hit tool. He looks like there could be some power in there somewhere too. Seems to be able to play a bunch of different positions, so that increases his chances of getting an opportunity someday.
