A great night down on the farm for the Giants organization.
AAA Fresno Grizzlies came storming back in the last two innings to defeat the Las Vegas 51's 11-7:
Emmanuel Burriss- 2 for 3, 2 BB, PO, CS. BA= .323.
Conor Gillaspie- 2 for 5. BA= .316.
Brett Pill- 3 for 4, BB. BA= .486.
Ryan Rohlinger- 2 for 4, 2 HR(3). BA= .176.
Doug Mathis- 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 3.60.
Henry Sosa- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 11.57.
Burriss had a nice night at the plate, but a bit of a rough one on the bases, negating 2 of his 4 successful PA's. Sosa had a nice outing after a couple of terrible ones.
AA Richmond Flying Squirrels beat the Altoona Curve 5-2:
Roger Kieschnick- 2 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .250.
Johnny Monell- 2 for 3, SF. BA= .261.
Justin Fitzgerald- 5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.90.
Justin Dowdy- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Jason Stoffel- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(3). ERA- 0.00.
Two solid starts for Fitz. Stoffel has been lights out as the closer so far.
A+ San Jose Giants crushed the Visalia Rawhide 16-0:
Gary Brown- 2 for 6, 3B, BB. BA= .282.
Carter Jurica- 2 for 3, 2 BB, HBP. BA= .214.
Jarrett Parker- 2 for 5, 2B, BB. BA= .188.
Chris Dominguez- 2 for 5, 2 HR(4). BA= .333.
Nick Liles- 5 for 5, 2B. BA= .455.
Ryan Lollis- 4 for 6. BA= .429.
Wendell Fairley- 3 for 6, 2B. BA= .323.
Craig Westcott- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 2.79.
Obviously a chance for several players to pad the old stat line. Dominguez' 2 HR's were particularly exciting to see. I'm tellin' ya, this San Jose team is scary good. A bunch of players who appear to belong at a higher level.
Augusta Greenjackets downed the West Virginia Power 5-3:
Ryan Scoma- 1 for 3, 3B. BA= .265.
Austin Fleet- 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 6.75.
Fleet had a much better game than his first start.

ReplyDeleteWe said hello to Ford after the game, and asked what the heck Steve Decker is putting in the Gatorade jug.
The Grizzlies entered Friday 31 for 32 in stolen-base attempts in just eight games. The next most among Triple-A franchises was Indianapolis, with 12 steals.
“He told us we’re going to run if we’re tired, we’re going to run if we’re … it doesn’t even matter. We’re going to run teams to death,” said Ford, who was 7 for 7 in steal attempts. “Now we’ve got catchers scared to throw to the bases. They don’t even have a chance.”
call it bush if you want...but decker is teaching these guys to be fearless on the base paths...that is a good thing
wind was blowing in both sj and las vegas....funny how in sj, the giants were the only ones who took advantage of the elements
seems that baggs is also pretty impressed with dominguez....
lets see how he does when he gets sent to richmond...and i hear he still needs help with his footwork at third
Yeah well, it is kind of bush league because it's taking advantage of an ineptitude by opposing teams due to lack of experience that won't work at the MLB level, at least for very long. You watch, it's going to taper off at the AAA level too as teams figure out what's going on and take steps to combat it. Having said that, I do think it's good for guys like Ford and Burriss, whose only ticket to the majors is if they can be a force on the basepaths, to practice the art of stealing. As opposing teams adjust, it will force them to readjust. They will get better at it in the process. The whole team thing is definitely bush league though. Sorry to say it, but if Travis is "fearless" on the basepaths, he's going to just get is butt thrown out, that's all.
ReplyDeleteAs for Dominguez and his footwork, Buster needed to work on footwork at the beginning of last year. Footwork is teachable and Dominguez has shown a willingness to learn, at least at the plate.
Doc, I hope you don't mind me calling you Doc. This my first time viewing your blog and I'm really liking it! Like you I've been a Giants fan for a real long time. Since I was 4 or 5, I can't remember but growing up in the 60's in NJ, and the Giants had already moved away it wasn't easy to follow the Giants as I liked. I would get TSN, and go to games at Shea (Mets) or the Vet(Phillies) when ever I could. I live in SC now so it's even harder for me to see the Giants in person unless I want to go to Atlanta or Washington,BUT like you said it's alot easier now to follow the team and it's minor affiliates. In 2 weeks I am going to see the Richmond FlyingSquirrels where I will get my picture taken with the World Series trophy. I'm going to try and get to a few Augusta GreenJacket games this year aswell. I just have 1 suggestion if you don't mind because some of us might not be as familiar with the minor leaguers as you could you please put their positions by their names. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteThank you,
Bubba
Bubba,
ReplyDeleteThank you! Yeah, Doc is OK. Glad you found the site. It's a labor of love. The comments have become a vital part of the blog. I'll see what I can do about listing positions in the Down on the Farm reports. It's already a big effort and that adds another few seconds for each name which adds up. You might want to go back in the archives and look up by Giants Top 50 Prospect List which includes positions, birthdates, height/weight etc.
Keep on visiting and please keep the comments coming! Maybe you can give us some reports from the Richmond and Augusta games?
Does anyone know what happenend to Thomas Neal? He was in the Fresno boxscore in the 1st game and has since disappeared.
ReplyDeleteHey, DrB, I must have missed it but I don't see Chuckie Jones name in anything, is he injured or in extended spring training for something? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAbout positions, shouldn't it be listed where you pick up their game stats? Just want to help, though I would add that adding positions for each and every player would add maybe 5% to your time to compile this.
Perhaps it would be easier to place on your side panel a link to each minor league affiliate, direct to their roster listing of what positions they play? Though sometimes they just lump all the infielders together, and I find that useless, maybe there is a section on positions played defensively? Or maybe just a link to Baseball-Reference.com's Giants minor league affiliates page, which lists all the players: users can then just click on the player and see what positions he plays.
Actually, Travis Ishikawa has been a pretty good baserunner during his career, he regularly tallied double digit steals (albeit low teens) in the minors and Bill James had him as a very productive baserunner in his time in the majors, in terms of taking extra bases and such.
Don't know if I'm the only one, but I've been having problems logging into the comments section. I've lost my posts a number of times already, so I've been copying the comment first before posting. Appears to be a problem where the system is not yet logged into Google yet, once that is resolved, then I can comment with no problem.
ReplyDeleteNot that I expect you to handle this, DrB, but just want to see if others noticed this problem and have a better solution than what I've been doing. I'm a former programmer and system manager and I have problems with tech today, so I don't expect non-tech people to have an easy time with this, we just have to kumbayah and help each other.
Sorry to be OT, but wanted to see if someone might have a better idea why this is now happening.
Neal to 7 day DL 3/7 - foot contusion
ReplyDeleteSorry if it's hard to log into the comments. Yes, I believe you have to log in to a google account first. I know nothing about how these sites work. I am essentially computer illiterate. My daughter helped me set it up. I'll ask her, but I don't think there is anyway around the google login thing.
ReplyDeleteIdeally, I wanted to set it up so every time I wrote a player's name it would be highlighted and link to his player bio page. I have no idea how to do that and it seems like it would be a ton of work.
I assume Chuckie Jones is in extended spring training and we'll see him on one of the short season teams, probably Salem-Keizer.
