Down on the Farm: 5/31/2023

AAA:  Tacoma Rainiers outlasted the Sacramento River Cats 7-6(10 innings).

Luis Matos CF- 3 for 5, BB, 2 SB(4).  BA= .362.
David Villar 3B- 3 for 6, HR(3).  BA= .294.
Jacob Nottingham C- 2 for 3, BB, SB(1).  BA= .254.
Michael Gigliotti LF- 2 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .242.
Sean Hjelle RHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 8/3.  ERA= 3.00.

Villar's HR was the Cats only XBH out of 11 hits.  They drew 13 walks.  Whether intentional or not, there seems to be a shift in organization emphasis from power to contact while maintaining high walk rates.

AA:  Erie Seawolves poured it on in extra innings to crush the Richmond Flying Squirrels 10-3.

Vaun Brown RF- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(2).  BA= .355.
Marco Luciano SS- 2 for 4, HR(5).  BA= .185.
Carter Aldrete LF- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(1).  BA= .268.
Landon Roupp RHP- 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 2.31.
Carson Seymour RHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.11.
Juan Sanchez LHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.28.

10 of Marco Luciano's 15 hits have been XBH's with 5 2B and 5 HR.  Twitter reports his HR in this game left the yard at

A+:  Eugene Emeralds buried the Vancouver Canadians 8-1.

Grant McCray CF- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .235.
Carter Howell LF- 4 for 5, 2B, 3B.  BA= .556.
Victor Bericoto RF- 2 for 3, BB, SF.  BA= .297.
Aeverson Arteaga SS- 2 for 5.  BA= .214.
Carson Whisenhunt LHP- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 1.42.
Jose Cruz RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.45.
Tyler Myrick RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.08.

Carter Howell is off to huge start after promotion to A+.  Carson Whisenhunt seems destined to at least reach AA this season.  Jose Cruz is on the 40-man roster so would seem to be a candidate for aggressive promotion.

A:  San Jose Giants defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 8-5.

Andrew Kachel 2B- 2 for 5.  BA= .305.
Onil Perez DH- 2 for 4.  BA= .313.
Anthony Rodriguez SS- 3 for 3, 2 2B, 3B, 2 E.  BA= 1.000.
Hayden Birdsong RHP- 3.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.67.
Miguel Mora RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 13.29.

Anthony Rodriguez makes his full season debut.  Jose Ramos SS/2B and Diego Velasquez SS/2B are still listed on the SJ Giants roster with no IL moves.  Situation worth watching.

  1. About the 12 walks at AAA, automatic strike zone is being used in AAA this year, which does not seem to be going well. Giants promote Bailey early thinking his hitting was negatively affected by the automatic strike zone, which seems be correct. There is also some talk about whether Harrison's walks are due to the same thing. I heard taking pitches not matter what was teh right thing to get on base, which negatively affects player development.

  2. Can the automatic strike zone affect both hitters and pitchers negatively?
Seems it should be neutral or favor one or the other...

    1. I think the problem in the minor leagues this year isn't so much the automatic strike zone but that they shrunk size of the strike zone. That should help hitters but the hitters may be adjusting too.

  3. Division baseball is stupid – S-T-U-P-I-D!
In the AL there are 5 teams within ½ game of the 6th seed but Minnesota would get the slot because they are the only Central Division team above .500 – 2 Eastern AND 2 Western Division team are as good (or ½ game behind).
The NL isn't quite as bad but there are 4 teams bunched for the last 2 spots, but Milwaukee or Pittsburgh will get at least 1 spot and could get both while Miami & SF are in tight with them and San Diego is close.
With the balance schedules, good teams within a division have to play each other multiple more times than weak teams in a bad division and thus get a pronounced disadvantage.
That's not equitable, nor does it allow the best to go to phony playoffs.
Let the best get a chance to go to the World Series and dump this nonsense. A very good NY Yankee team could miss out while an under performing NY Met make the playoff. (This is not the case at this moment but it's not very far off.)
In the American League Eastern & Western Divisions combined only one team has a losing record while only ONE team in the Central Division is over .500! Barely.
Why shouldn't the Best teams get a chance to get to the World Series?

    1. Anything more than going back to two full leagues with a single World Series between the two winners runs the possibility of less talented teams winning it all. That goes all the way back to the Pirates in 1971 and a Mets team that I think was barely .500 winning the NL title and losing to the A's in the World Series in the 1970's. Although there is some charm in every team playing at least 1 series against each other every season, I am sorry to see the division rivalries diluted as you really got to know the opposing players and team characteristics. A lot of these teams they are playing this season I don't even recognize the names of most of their players.

    2. 2014!
Although the Pirates were slightly worse than the Giants with only 88 wins, the other 3 teams in the play-in won but 89 games and 2 of them made the WS. The winningest teams in both leagues lost division series.
Maybe not as calamitous as your examples but one we liked very much!

    3. And weren't the Cleveland Indians widely considered to be the far more talented team in 1954? So the best team did not always win even back when it was just the two league winners playing a single 7 game World Series.
