The Pirates always seem to play the Giants tough and they roughed up Alex Wood LHP for 6 runs in the 3'rd and 4'th innings to put this one away early for a series win. Key Lines:
The Giants got a total of 12 hits including 2 each from Lamonte Wade Jr 1B(.271), J. D. Davis 3B(.282), Blake Sabol LF(.262) and Patrick Bailey C(.333). LMWJ had a 2B and Mike Yastrzemski CF added a triple. They weren't able to keep the line moving enough to overcome the Pirates early scoring.
Luke Jackson RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00. Jackson makes his first appearance as a Giant a success but in a losing cause.
The loss dropped the Giants back to .500 and 1 game off the pace for the final Wild Card playoff spot.
The Giants get a rare day off at home before a weekend series against the Orioles with Logan Webb RHP starting Friday night against Dean Kremer RHP.
Michael Conforto's heel injury seems to be worse than initially thought. He is DTD after X-rays and an MRI showed no structural damage.
The BUCS are progressing in their rebuild with a 28-27 record. The Giants are progressing as well, farm system finally produced good players like Bailey, Schmidt, and others to come that will make this season very interesting. I'd like to see young starting pitchers like Harrison come up. But he's not on the 40 man roster, so another player would have to be DFA'd. I was disappointed Tristin Beck didn't get a chance to start as well as Hjellie when he was up. Maybe the Giants have high standards for starting their young pitching prospects? They missed a good chance to see what they got as starters in my view.
ReplyDeleteAnd Matos!
DeleteTo balance things out, perhaps it's better to be optimistic after a loss or two, and to criticize after a win.
ReplyDeleteIn that spirit, we fans really have something to look forward to in the all-important up-the-middle positions of C, SS and CF, with Bailey (and maybe still also Bart), Schmitt (plus Luciano) and perhaps soon, Matos. For starting pitching, the future includes Webb and Harrison as co-aces, plus perhaps Whisenhunt and Crawford..
What's even more exciting, they are all draft-and-develop, home-grown players. Basically, hard work, patience and maybe a little bit of luck (health-wise, etc). None of those borderline pickups that in many cases have resulted in marginal contributions at best...in many cases...at best...in many cases...whose names we often struggle to come up with immediately, without the aid of a search engine or an A.I. personal assistant.
That'll hopefully bring fans back to the park...year in, year out. People are more inclined to identify with players who will be with the team for more than 1 or 2 years.
That's what we can look forward to...not backward...look forward to. We can sense a bit of that in LG's comment above.
Yes! The shuffle may produce wins but longevity produces fans...
DeleteThere is no substitute for winning to draw fans. If the team is winning every year, the rest will take care of itself.
DeleteFZ has to be getting on the phones to acquire another starter before the trade deadline. Wood would be better served out of the pen or convert him to an opener. Tristan Beck is probably getting stretched in the minors so he can start when he is recalled. Harrison is close but, still not ready to start in the show.
