Game Wrap 6/19/2023: Giants 7 Padres 4(10 innings)

Mike Yastrzemski's second home run of the game was a splash hit, walk-off, 3-run homer to extend the Giants winning streak to 8 games.  Key Lines:

Mike Yastrzemski RF- 3 for 5, 2 HR(10).  BA= .257.  Yes, he had help and while it's not possible for 1 player to singlehandedly win a MLB game, YtY came darn close tonight.  2 HR, 4 RBI's, 3 Runs.  Wow!

David Villar RHP- 1 for 3, HR(5), BB.  BA= .154.  Villar's HR was the Giants first run of the game and a critical element of the win.  Since his recall on July 14, Villar is 3 for 8 with 2 2B and a HR with a BB and only 1 K.  Much like last season when he was sent down and then recalled, he looks like a different hitter in his second gig.

Keaton Winn RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 8/3.  ERA= 1.93.  Talk about bulk innings!  Winn gave up a solo HR to Juan Soto in his first inning of work then shut the Padres down through the 9'th.  Again, that by itself did not win the game but the Giants likely don't win without it.  In two MLB appearances, Winn has a line of 0-0, 1.93, 9 IP, 2 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.  He'll probably ride the Sacramento shuttle the rest of this year but he's really looking like a building block for the future.

The Win allowed the Giants to keep pace withe D'Backs, 3.5 games behind in the NL West, and extend their lead on the Dodgers for the 2'nd Wild Card Playoff spot to 1 full game.

Anthony DeSclafani RHP tries to keep the winning ways going tomorrow evening facing Seth Lugo RHP.

  1. Did anyone see the positive turnaround by Yaz and Lamont Wade coming this season? I remember during Spring Training Susan Slusser saying that Brandon Belt told her Lamont Wade will make an impact if he's healthy . FO deserves credit for going with him. It's a small sample size, but a pitcher like Keaton Winn who throws an easy 97 mph fastball and a nasty split finger fastball shouldn't be riding the Sacramento shuttle. They need to make room for him on the MLB roster permanently if he continues to impress..

    1. I think I said YtY could be a valuable player if he delivered an average season(for him) at the plate and hold down the strong side platoon in CF. I think I also said it was possible for LMWJ to play like 2021 if he could stay healthy. So far YtY is on course for an average to above-average season. LMWJ has transformed into Joey Votto 2.0. I did not see that coming at all.

    2. I would like to see Beck and Winn to step up into higher leverage roles with Junis moving down to lower leverage situations.

  2. This team is a redux of 2021 when 6 Giant position players had a bWAR of 2+, a Starter.
With more than half the season left – 90 games – at least 6 are on track for that and doesn't include Conforto, Schmitt, Flores, Sabol, Slater, Villar, or Matos.
Pitching-wise, Webb is 2021's Gausman, Cobb is DeSlafani, DeSlafani is Webb-lite, Doval is McGee, Tyler is Tyler, Taylor is Leone, Wood is Wood-lite, and 2023's rest is probably less than 2021's rest, but not a lot.
Current 8-game winning streak is 1 game short of 2021's longest 9-game streak.
This team did not have the great start of 2021 when the Giants were 20 over .500 @ 72 games because this team is not as good but neither are the 2023 Dodgers as good as 2021.
AZ is another story but SF has made up 4 games in their 8-game winning streak, now just 3.5 behind.
And then there's Atlanta, who, ironically, @ 46-26 has an identical record as the 2021 Giants had @ 72 games.

    1. LOL - this on the same day that Grant Brisbee compares 2023 Giants to 2021 Giants in The Athletic!
And last night (Tuesday) SF tied their longest 2021 winning streak.

  3. Shout out to Schmitt for taking a walk in the 9th with 2 outs yesterday. Keep that up!

  4. Although Brandon Belt is on the DL and has only played in 48 of 74 games, he's doing his thing with a .378 OBP and a nice 130 OPS+.
As per usual, his defense is degraded by both B-R and Fangraphs but who has saved more throwing errors than the Baby Giraffe?
Jays are hanging in, a game out of the WC – could the Giants see him in the WS?
