Game Wrap 6/10/2023: Cubs 4 Giants 0

The Giants came within 4 outs of being no-hit by veteran junkballer and nemesis Kyle Hendricks RHP.  Key Lines:

John Brebbia RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.38.  Very impressive 2 innings of work to open the game for Brebbia, which made me ponder what if the Giants were to stretch him out and make him a SP?  The disturbing part of this line is he's going to open tomorrow's game too!

Jakob Junis RHP- 2.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.58.  Junis has been pitching quite well, so can't really argue with him being the first bulk-innings guy today.  It's just that Junis is going to have days like this.  In this case the ballgame was all but over by the time he exited.

Sean Manaea LHP- 4.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  Not sure why Manaea has not been given a chance to start again or at least be the first bulk-innings guy out.  As noted above, by the time he got in the game, it was all but over.

Looked up Hendricks career splits.  Yep, overall career ERA is 3.47, 2.29 vs Giants.  He owns them.

The Loss drops the Giants back to .500 and now they have to win tomorrow to not get swept at home.  John Brebbia reprises his role as Opener, but who's going to pitch the rest of the game?  Tristan Beck RHP should be available but he pitched 2+ innings Friday night so probably can't go more than 2 or 3.  Rumor has it that Keaton Winn RHP will get called up.  He's on the 40-man roster.

  1. Doc,

What do you think of the recent article on the Giants Spanish Language Broadcasters? My knowledge from some Giants insiders is that they are that they are infamously frugal operationally (not towards players or things on the field). So, I can understand how something like this would be overlooked. However, I think the organization should rightfully be put on criticized for this, sometimes doing the right thing means not focusing on the P&L.

    1. I mean, are you surprised? The Giants are run by a bunch if very rich white dudes and the one who owns the largest number of shares is well documented to contribute to right wing politicians. Hopefully being exposed in mainstream sports publications will correct it. Q: Beyond speaking out about it on Giants oriented websites, what should us ordinary fans be doing about it?

    2. I would be curious to know how the Giants‘ Spanish language broadcasts compare to those of the other four California teams, or generally in MLB.

    3. Does contributing to "right wing politicians" make someone a bad "dude"?
Isn't personally trying to buy wins like billionaire hedge fund manager Steve Cohen is doing as bad?
Cohen is worth $9+ billion, Johnson $6. Should we take a look at whom Cohen donates to?
      Might not like the answer.

    4. Not sure what Steve Cohen has to do with the discussion. Nobody here has pointed to him as a being an example of good owner. Yes, the extreme right-wing/white nationalist politicians Johnson has contributed to make me think he is not such a good guy.

  2. Like Tauchman's catch against the Hated Ones to save a game, Haniger's no-doubt double saved the Giants from the eternal embarrassment of being no-hit.
OK, eternal is overstating, but being no hit at home by a less than stellar pitcher is embarrassing.
Side note: Tauchman was in the game, got a hit, and made a sensational catch that saved the no-no for a while...

  3. John Brebbia doesn’t have the stamina to be a starter otherwise perhaps someone would’ve considered him as a starter before his age 33 season. He’s a good reliever, don’t see the point in the opener thing. It seems to really rub the starting pitchers the wrong way and I think it hurts their morale. I don’t think relievers care one way or another about starting but starters certainly feel like they should be starting, deservingly so. Brebbia has been a nice cheap bullpen piece for them but he’s way on the wrong side of 30 and likely has got only 3 or so years left of effectiveness. Since we aren’t a World Series caliber team, we should trade him for someone that can be part of their future.

    1. The Giants are still in contention this season and they need Brebbia. If and when they fall hopelessly behind the last Wild Card playoff spot, he could bring back a nice prospect.
