Alex Cobb dominated his former team to lead the Giants to the shutout win. Key Lines:
Lamonte Wade Jr 1B- 2 for 3, 2 2B, 2 BB. BA= .277. Wow! Is LMWJ having a season or what? We're now into June and he's still sporting an OBP >.400 and is currently riding a hot streak and really hasn't had a slump so far. Very Vottoesque!
Austin Slater PH/CF/LF- 1 for 2. BA= .367. Slater was Gabe Kapler's secret weapon as the O's brought in the LHP to face YtY with runners on first and second with one out. Kap countered with Slater who hacked a single to LF scoring Crawford from 2B to extend the lead to 4-0.
Wilmer Flores DH- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .248. Wilmer's 2-run single in the third inning was the biggest hit of the game driving in 2 runs to for a 3-run inning.
The Kids- Blake Sabol LF, Patrick Bailey C and Casey Schmitt 2B went a combined 2 for 12 in the game. Sabol looked lost against LHP's and kept trying to bunt his way one. Bailey is definitely not as good from the R side of the plate so the Giants may want him and Bart to form a straight L-R platoon when Bart comes off the IL. It seems like the league has noted that Casey Schmitt swings at everything so they don't have to throw him strikes. He'll have to make that adjustment.
Alex Cobb RHP- 7.2 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K's, GO/AO= 10/1. ERA= 2.71. Cobb made sure he didn't get Cained today totally shutting down the Orioles lineup into the 8'th inning. Scott Alexander LHP got the final out of the 8'th and Camilo Doval RHP pitched a scoreless 9'th in non-save situation.
Anthony DeSclafani RHP tries for a series win tomorrow afternoon facing Tyler Wells, a 6' 8" RHP.
Bart and Bailey would be an intriguing platoon. I wonder where that would leave Sabol. Certainly don’t want to send Sabol back to the Pirates. Will be fun to see how that position develops.
ReplyDeleteLMWJ isn't Belt but he has turned into a good 1B.
ReplyDeleteThe eye test always made BB9 a great 1B to the Giants' fan but consistently had negative dWARs. There should be an Error Saved statistic for 1Bmen. Maybe there is one?
LMWJ is having a great season. Most valuable member of the team (as a batter, excluding pitchers)?
DeleteThe question is whether 1) this is his break out season, or 2) will he come down to earth, either at some point this season, or 3) or come down after this season is over (making this his career year)?
Impossible to know any of those but it's hard to argue with his approach so far. As long as he maintains that, his performance should be sustainable.
DeleteA 4-0 lead after 6 is probably a "safe" lead, but again SF left runner-after-runner on base. The cumulative LOB reached 24 for 8 innings with Bailey and Sabol leading with 5 each, plus Davis and Schmitt had 4 apiece.
ReplyDeleteWith Big Bucks invested in Haniger (up to $43,500,000 for 3 years), Slater ($5,411,000 career) gets to watch Haniger's occasional HR with his .651 OPS...
I believe Haniger has a higher ceiling than Slater who is strictly a short-side platoon bat while Haniger has produced in a full time role when healthy. But it's also possible the accumulated injuries took their toll on Haniger.
DeleteFarhan spoke today about envisioning the team being aggressive at the trade deadline to help push the team towards the playoffs. Hoping we keep up our strong play to see what he can pull off.
ReplyDeleteSunday's lineup is a, well, let's just say Blake Sabol has arrived, apparently...
