AAA: Sacramento River Cats defeated the Tacoma Rainiers 7-3.
Luis Matos RF- 4 for 6, 2B, HR(1). BA= .391.
Jacob Nottingham C- 4 for 5, HR(5). BA= .289.
Shane Matheny CF- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .232.
Drew Strotman RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 6.46.
Seems like it's only a matter of time and an injury or two before Matos breaks down the door to a major league gig. Does Jacob Nottingham provide enough catching depth to create trade opportunities involving a certain former first round draft pick?
AA: Erie Seawolves crushed the Richmond Flying Squirrels 9-1.
Jimmy Glowenke 2B- 1 for 4. BA= .125.
Parker Dunshee RHP- 2.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 6.52.
Randy Rodriguez RHP- 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 2.45.
Glowenke makes his AA debut. Carson Whisenhunt LHP and Jose Cruz RHP reportedly also promoted. Hmmm....didn't we say something about that in yesterday's Down on the Farm? Hey! Doesn't this seem like a good time to promote Randy Rodriguez to AAA seeing as how he's on the 40-man roster and all?
A+: Vancouver Canadians blanked the Eugene Emeralds 8-0.
Nothing to see here.
A: San Jose Giants pounded the Fresno Grizzlies 10-1.
Diego Velasquez 2B- 2 for 3, 2 BB. BA= .321.
Thomas Gavello DH- 2 for 4. BA= .280.
Tanner O'Tremba LF- 4 for 5, 2B. BA= .291.
Anthony Rodriguez 3B- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .625.
Zach Morgan 1B- 3 for 5, HR(3). BA= .236.
Alexander Suarez CF- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .270.
Reggie Crawford LHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Jack Choate LHP- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 2.31.
Daniel Blair RHP- 3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 2.63.
Wow! Too much good stuff! 3 20 yo and under international players at 3B, SS, 2B. Speaking of promotions....I would like to see Diego Velasquez up to A+ Eugene before the end of the season if nothing else to give him try to avoid the adjustments Luis Matos and Aeverson Arteaga and to a lesser extent Grant McCray had to make. when they were assigned there after a full season in San Jose. Other big news here is Crawford with another strong performance as he verrry slowly builds up his innings. Post on Twitter reports his FB was 94-98 MPH.
Does "a certain former first round draft pick" have trade value?
ReplyDeleteI would guess he is worth a high ceiling/low floor low A player. And I would wager that the Yankees would be interested.
DeleteProbably would be selling low in that case.
DeleteEven if Bart is no longer the key or a key to this season's success, I still feel he can be a good right handed alternative to Bailey. To me, Sabol is better off focusing on hitting, and on D, on playing LF and DH, and as a 3rd option at C.
Reading on the topic, I understand the so-called Catcher's ERA is not statistically significant. A pitcher's win total or winning percentage can be misleading, like a quarterback. Probably even more so with a catcher's win total as well. With that said, going back to April 26, 2023 (I only went back that far), these are the results of the games Sabol started at C:
4/26/2023 vs. St. Louis. W. 7-3
4/27/2023 vs. St. Louis L. 0-6
4/29/2023 vs. S.D. L. 11-16
5/1/2023 vs. Houston L 3-7
5/7/2023 vs. Mil. L 3-7
5/8/2023 vs. Washington L 1-5
5/12/2023 vs Ariz. L 5-7
5/19/2023 vs. Miami W 4-3
5/24/2023 vs. Minnesota L 1-7
5/28/2023 vs. Milwaukee L 5-7
That's 2-8. During the same time span, the Giants went 16-13. The last win when Sabol started, against Miami on 5-19-2023, he went 0-1 before Flores pinch hit for him with Bailey finishing up that close game (4-3). Was the switch for better defense in order to secure a win in that game or was he hurt during the game?
The runs the team gave up when he started during that time span were 3, 6, 16, 7, 7, 5, 7, 3,7 and 7. If there is not such a thing as 'catcher's ERA,' perhaps it was just a small sample size issue and bad luck.
One noticeable trend is that he's been starting less and less often at C recently, whereas between 4/26/2023 and 5/1/2023, it was like every 2 days. Was it because the catching option around 4/26/2023 was Bart, whereas the current alternative is Bailey, thus accounting for the difference in how often he started?
(I was going to wait until Sabol starts a game that ends with a W to make this comment, but since the topic of catching depth involving a certain former first round draft pick was brought up, it is presented here.)
Nice write up, thanks.
DeleteVaun Brown didn't play yesterday – is he on his way to Sacramento?

DeleteRe: Joey Bart-Now that the schedule is more balanced (In 2023, each team will now play their divisional opponents in only 52 games, decreased from 76 games from the previous schedule format), for Joey Bart's sake I would like him to go to Colorado. Colorado's backup is Austin Wynns who is hitting .174 currently. Free Joey Bart! Question, do you think the balanced schedule will shift some of the trades to occur within a team's own division?
