Game Wrap 6/22/2023: Padres 10 Giants 0

Gary Sanchez C(Padres) avenged yesterday's plate blocking call by hitting a 3-run HR before the fans could find their seats and you had to know this game was over right then and there.  Manny Machado added a 3-run HR of his own later in the game and the Giants managed just 3 hits in the game.  Not much else to say about this one.

Sometimes it's good for winning streaks to end and when they do it's probably best to end with a catharsis game like this one rather than, say, a 1-0 loss or in some other heartbreaking fashion.  These games happen.  Start over tomorrow.

With the Loss, the Giants fell 3.5 games behind the D'Backs but remain 0.5 games ahead of the Dodgers and fall 0.5 games behind the Marlins for the first Wild Card playoff spot.

The Giants start a new series against the first place D'Backs tomorrow evening with Logan Webb RHP facing Zach Davies RHP.

Injury Update:  Good news on YtY's MRI.  No strain, some inflammation.  Hopes to only miss a couple of games.

Churn WatchSean Hjelle RHP was thanked for his stellar 4 IP last night with an option back to AAA Sacramento.  Bryce Johnson OF was recalled.

The Giants traded cash to the Phillies for Dalton Guthrie OF.  Guthrie is 27 yo.  B-R, T-R, 5'11", 160 lbs.  Drafted in round 6 in 2017.  Fangraphs rates him as having a 50 hit tool and 50 speed but only 30 game power.  He has a knack for drawing walks and has a MLB slash line of .244/.393/.358.  He's on the 40-man roster.  Mitch Haniger OF was moved to the 60-day IL to make room.

  1. The good part about losing in a blowout is they didn't have to use their high leverage relievers like Doval and the Rogers brothers. The Giants might need to have Stripling or one of their talented rookie bulk relievers like Beck, Winn, or Hjellie step in as a starter in the 2nd half. DeScafani has been reliable taking the ball every 5th day, but might run out of gas in the 2nd half. He has pitched 81 innings this season but only pitched 19 innings in 2022 due to injuries

    1. They also might need to acquire a frontline SP at the trade deadline.

  2. Guthrie is 27 yo. B-R, - another hill for Slater, albeit not a big hill.

    1. Hill? The only hill Slater has to climb is his own health. Over 1.000 OPS against LHP.

  3. Farhan should be on the phone with Chicago about trading for either cease or giolito right now

    1. Cease has 2 1/2 years of control. Will be very, very expensive. A building block guy in Chicago so you'll need to overwhelm with offer.

  4. I don't think Harrison is quite ready for prime time yet!

  5. Harrison, Luciano and prospects for Corbin Burnes?

  6. It can’t cost that much for a year and a half of control for a guy that hasn’t been himself for a year and a half now. Shane Bieber is also looking like a shell of himself and Cleveland has a ton of young pitchers but I would try to get him simply because he is a top line starter and would be cheaper than Burnes or even Stroman or Giolito. They do need another front end innings eater if they plan on making it to September

    1. Supply and demand. No supply, high demand. You'd better believe that'll be the going rate of a 4.6 fWAR pitcher just last year, plus the elite numbers previously. They're not gonna give you much of a discount for this year's struggles.

Shane Bieber's numbers are pretty much identical to Desclafani's this year. Don't need 2 discos. Cubs are buying unless they fall apart. Giolito is risky. Is he better than internal options?
