Sean Newcomb LHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Not much more to say about Matos. He is batting .438 in June with 6 HR's. You can reasonably say this is a PCL mirage but he raked at AA too. If the PCL is not a challenge for him and you leave him there too long, he's only going to develop bad habits. On the other hand, what veteran player does a team contending for a playoff spot drop to make room for him. He's going to have to wait for an injury or some kind of deadline trade to make room.
Alex Wood worked 3 IP in a rehab assignment. I would think he'll get called up to take his next turn in the Giants rotation. Sean Newcomb's rehab progresses to AAA. Will he eventually get activated or will FZ flip him in a trade like he did Matthew Boyd and Trevor Rosenthal last year?
AA: Altoona Curve outlasted the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-4(10 innings).

Carson Seymour RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 7/1. ERA= 3.35.

Complex leagues were idle as usual on Sundays.
It's been exciting to follow Luis Matos this season. It's starting to remind me of the 2010 season when we were excited about a Buster posey callup. On July 1 2010 the Giants traded veteran catcher Benjie Molina to Texas to make room for Buster posey to get a callup and the SF Giants went on to win their 1st world series! Posey was hitting .349 6 hrs 32 rbis in AAA at the time of callup . If Matos keeps raking the ball close to a 400 clip this month, anything can happen in terms of a potential callup this month. Great to see Luciano starting to hit. I'll attribute his slow start to rehab he's had due to his back injury. Hope Luciano keeps hitting bombs and more importantly stays. Healthy . Lot of good stuff happening on the farm!
ReplyDeletePotential comps to Benjie Molina as trades to make room for Matos would be Conforto, Haniger, YtY, Slater and Sabol. Conforto is performing too well. Haniger is on a 3 year contract. He is probably untradable right now and they are not going to just drop him. Slater has a limited role but is performing very well in it. Sabol is a guy you want to hang onto longterm if you can but probably has some trade value if you can't. YtY is hitting just .150 over his last 7 games. If that continues another couple of weeks, trading or DFA'ing him might become a serious consideration.
DeleteIt will not happen because they signed him to a 3 year contract,,,,,but the logical person to see lose time to Matos would be Mitch Haniger. Other than a flash here and there he is a black hole in the lineup. He has progressively moved down the line up(he hit seventh yesterday). We are two months into the season and he has not produced, it is as simple as that. Matos in center, a Yaz/Slater mix and match in right and Conforto in left would be fine.
DeletePerhaps YtY would accept a DFA if he thinks he has a route back. Go to Sac and hit .400 and he'll be back when the Giants call him.
DeleteOf course, maybe his agent will get him a gig and Sayonara, you were a good Giant.
OTOH, if the so-called Giant "braintrust" would give Slater a chance, maybe he would fetch a 5th starter. Throw in Sayastripling and $20,000,000
No, Mitch Haniger is not the logical person to lose playing time to Matos precisely because he is on a 3-year contract and he has a long track record of being an excellent hitter when healthy. Way too soon to give up on him and write off the rest of his contract.
