Game Wrap 7/7/2018: Cardinals 3 Giants 2

Jeff Samardzija wasn't half bad in his return from the DL and the bullpen shut it down for 4 innings, but the offense once again failed to capitalize leaving the Giants on the losing end of a 1-run differential.  Key Lines:

Brandon Belt 1B- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .296.  Belt was the only hitter in the lineup with more than 1 hit had the only Giants XBH.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.42.  Shark kept the ball in the yard and dialed it up to 96 MPH, so maybe he's finally fully healthy?  Let's all hope!

Bullpen- 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  Derek Holland, Sam Dyson, Cory Gearrin and Mark Melancon all pitched 1 shutout inning each.  None are part of the current Key 3 of Will Smith, Tony Watson and Reyes Moronta.  Maybe the bullpen, which hit a hiccup when Hunter Strickland went on the DL, getting its mojo back? Dyson has not been scored on in his last 3 appearances.  Gearrin has had 5 consecutive scoreless appearances with just 1 hit in 4.1 IP with 5 K's and 0 BB.

The NL West leading D'Backs beat the Padres 3-1 while the Dodgers and Rockies also won so the Giants fall 4 games off the lead in 4'th place.  The Dodgers are 0.5 games back and the Rockies are 3 games behind.  The Padres continue to bring up the rear 11.5 games behind the leaders.

Madison Bumgarner tries for a series split tomorrow facing RHP Jack Flaherty.

Joe Panik hit the DL with his groin strain.  Kelby Tomlinson got passed up for the callup with Chase d'Arnaud getting the reward for his fine season in Sacramento.  Hunter Strickland was moved to the 60 Day DL to make room on the 40 man roster for d'Arnaud.  Chris Stratton was optioned down to Sacramento to make room for Jeff Samardzija on the 25 man active roster.

  1. Samardzija: I thought he looked good. Slater missed the diving catch I thought he should have had. The BABIP-double off the chopper that went over Sandoval's head... Then all those shitty flares, seeing-eye grounders, swinging bunts... Death by a thousand wet noodles...

  3. At last, we get to see 100+ FBs and a + OFer.
At a not insignificant cost if Jason Bahr becomes a ML SP!
Wonder how much of Jackson's $$$ Giants get stuck with. Or Gearrin's which prorated is ~$700K (+/-) left for 2018.
