Game Wrap 7/10/2018: Cubs 2 Giants 0

A bloop double, a Wild Pitch and a throwing Error were all it took to ruin a dominant pitching performance by Derek Holland who was subbing in when Johnny Cueto's scheduled Start was moved back a day.  Key Lines:

Derek Holland LHP- 6.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 4.17.  Holland was masterful through 6.1 IP spotting his fastball on both side of the plate and mixing in secondary pitches.  The 8 K's tied a season high and this was his first Start where he did not issue a walk.  With 1 out in the 7'th, Addison Russell blooped a double to R-CF.  Bochy summoned Sam Dyson from the bullpen who bounced one in the dirt that got away from Nick Hundley.  Russell broke for 3B and Hundley's throw was offline and go away from Pablo Sandoval allowing Russell to score.  Dyson would go on to give up a another run, but it didn't matter with a Giants offense that is so cold, it froze over last night.

Ray Black RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 20.25.  The other bright spot from this game was a dominant inning from Ray Black who shook off his rough MLB debut.  Black maxed out at 99 MPH on the TV radar gun but that was more than enough has he blew away 2 Cubs and got the 3'rd out in a soft liner to 2B.  If Black stays healthy, it isn't hard to imagine him closing out games before the season is over.

The Loss dropped the Giants 4 games behind the NL West leading D'Backs who topped the Rockies 5-3.  The Dodgers lost to the Padres and are 1.5 games behind the D'Backs in 2'nd place.  The Rockies are 4.5 games behind the leaders while the Padres remain in last place, 12 games off the pace.

Johnny Cueto goes for the series win on an extra day's rest this afternoon facing lefty Mike Montgomery.

  1. Holland: I only saw the first five innings. He was sharp and his pitches were crisp. Too bad he got no support.
