Game Wrap 7/5/2018:

The Giants and their fans had to feel hopeful about coming home with Johnny Cueto coming off the DL to open their series with the Cardinals.  Those hopes were quickly dashed when Cueto gave up a 2 dingers and a 4-spot in the first inning while Luke Weaver spun a perfecto into the 6'th inning.   The Cardinals won going away.  Key Lines:

Alen Hanson LF/SS- 1 for 4, HR(6).  BA= .279.  Gorkys Hernandez finally broke Weaver's Perfecto in the 6'th on an IF single.  Hanson followed that with a 2-run shot into the RF arcade.

Johnny Cueto RHP- 5 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.95.  Cueto settled down after giving up a 5'th run in the 2'nd inning, so hopefully this was just some rust that had to get knocked off and he'll be back to his old self next start.

Ty Blach LHP- 0.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.68.  Not sure Blach has anything left in the tank.  May need some R&R in Sacramento.

Derek Holland LHP- 3.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.40.  After finishing the 6'th with a K, Holland gave up a single and homer to open the 7'th.  After that he settled down and put up a dominant K/BB line.

The D'Backs lost to the Padres 6-3 to fall out of first place by percentage points behind the idle Dodgers.  The Giants fell into 4'th place by percentage points behind the idle Rockies, 3.5 games behind the Dodgers.  The Padres still bring up the rear, 10.5 games off the pace.

Young Dereck Rodriguez tries to end the Giants losing streak tomorrow evening against John Gant.

  1. Ugly game all the way around but especially pitching. I can see a situation where all three of these pitchers aren't on the 25 man roster in the next couple of weeks. Cueto on DL again (maybe this time with surgery), Blach demoted, and Holland traded/released, the latter two to keep Suarez and Rodriguez.

  3. blach could benefit from a refresher course in sacramento and stratton slides to the bullpen or both get optioned and more dead weight gets dfa'd to clear room for ray black

    1. McC had another big story on Ray Black today - I think it plays out as you suggest, Black gets the Call Up and one of our underperformers gets sent down, many names to choose from

    2. As soon as the Giants truly become they're pretenders and not contenders, they can see what they can sell and eat some salary to clear some room on the 40-man roster. But that's only a slot, it still has to be paid for.
Bringing up a guy with a minor league contract costs a minimum major league prorated salary -- how close are they to CBT hell? Can they do that with Black or Rogers or anyone else?
There was a time when most thought Osich and Okert were dead men walking but Osich has been good again and Okert has had but one bad outing in his last 10.
Perhaps the Giants can get a little salary relief with Holland, maybe more with Hundley, but probably not with Dyson. The big contracts are unmovable except for the 3 you want to keep: Bumgarner and the Brandons.
The Giants could dump some of the BIG salaries if they send scholarships with them -- save money but you get nuttin' but space -- roster and payroll!

  4. Living in St. Louis, I heard the Cards side of game on the sports talk-radio. Apparently/allegedly Cueto's velocity was way down. Somewhere around 85 on his FB. If that's true, I'm not surprised he got hammered.

    1. you would think that Mabnagement would know this some time before Cueto was removed from game, as in a few days ago or in warm up phase in bullpen or by end of first inning ??
