Game Wrap 7/2/2018: Rockies 5 Giants 2

Well, that was a buzzkill of a game!  Madison Bumgarner went out for the 7'th inning with a 4-hit shutout, 22 consecutive scoreless IP and a 2-0 lead.  3 batters later he found himself with the bases loaded and no outs and was out of the game.  By the time the inning was over, he had lost the lead and the game.  The Rockies added 2 runs in the 8'th to salt it away, but the game was lost in the 7'th.  On the Disappointment scale, this one was at least an 8!  Key Lines:

Gorkys Hernandez CF- 1 for 4, HR(11).  BA= .283.  Gorkys led off the game with an opposite-field HR.

Buster Posey C- 2 for 3, 2 2B, BB.  BA= .295.  Buster loves to hit in Coors Field and he was the only Giants batter who seemed to have a clue against lefty Kyle Freeland.

Austin Slater LF- 0 for 4.  BA= .346.  Slater didn't have a great day at the plate but made 2 highlight reel catches in LF.

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 6 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.58.  Bummy got BABIP'd big time in the 7'th as all 3 hits he allowed were hit softly, but to be sure, his stuff was not what it was in his previous outing, and he was saved early by several great defensive player.  But how knows, maybe his stuff was better if you factor in the Coors Field effect.

Reyes Moronta RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.91.  Moronta's big mistake was walking the first batter he faced to drive in the first run of the game.  After that, he pretty much did what he was supposed to do.  A GIDP drove in 1 run to tie the game and a throwing error by Brandon Crawford allowed the 3'rd run.  His FB was hitting 99 MPH on the TV radar gun.

The NL West leading D'Backs lost to the Cardinals 6-3 so the Giants remain 2.5 games out of the division lead in 3'rd place.  The Dodgers pounded the Pirates 17-1 to close their gap to 1.5 games back in 2'nd place.  The Rockies are 5 games behind the leaders in 4'th place.  The Padres were idle and 10.5 games behind in last place.

Chris Stratton tries to get the Giants back on the winning side of the ledger tonight facing RHP Antonio Senzatela.

If you are a Giants prospect watcher and a fan who cares about the future of this team, not just in the next 2-3 years but for the next decade, July 2 was a great day for you.  As expected, the Giants signed the consensus #2 international prospect, SS/OF Marco Luciano for $2.6 M and 2 other top 30 international prospects, OF Jairo Pomares and OF Luis Matos, along with at least 8 others as the 2018-19 signing period commenced.  Check out my previous post Scouting the 2018 International Signing Period for scouting reports on these exciting prospects.  Although we won't see the results in San Francisco for several years, and the Giants have a checkered history with high priced international prospects, the Giants farm system just got a whole lot stronger!

  1. 2nd guessing corner: Moronta has given up more walks than hits, highest BB9 on the team, rookie to face Nolan Arenado NL leader in HRs and OPS (.993) with no outs and bases loaded?
The good news was Areano didn't hit a home run AND Moronta would have gotten out of that inning with the scored tied but for the MOST unexpected error EVER (which was the bad news)!
All that said, Hanson led off the next inning with a hit and Gorkys hit into the inevitable DP -- WHY is he hitting .296 with bases empty, .260 with runners on, and .241 "late-and-close"?
Another "odd" Hernández stat: he hits RHP much better than LHP (.301 v .256), whereas "No-field" Jackson is .282-.194 LHP-RHP. Despite being an even worse outfielder, Jackson's starts might should be against lefties, except for Gorkys lead-off HR? Go figure.

  2. ASG: Posey & Crawford have the best league BA at their positions in the face of Atlanta stuffing the ballot box across the board.
Freeman and Markakis are also leading at their positions BA and voting, but others are not near the leaders at their positions.
True, BA isn't determining but does provide a ranking tool, and similarly HRs.

Brave players ranking in ballot & BA:
C 3rd (NQ in BA, T 6th in HR --with Hundley!)
    1B 1st (1st in BA, 6th in HR)
    2B 1st (6th in BA, 1st in HR)
    3B 3rd (NQ in BA, T 11th in HR)
    SS 2nd (9th in BA, T 6th in HR)
    OF 1st, 5th, & 6th (2nd, 22nd, & NQ in BA, T 24th, T 33rd, T 41st in HR)

For the record, I've voted multiple times for all our IFers & C, plus Hunter Pence! I guess I'm stuffing, too!

    1. Giants: Belt, Crawford & Posey
Non-Giants: 3B - Arenado (Rockies); 2B - Scooter Gennett (Reds); OF - Cain (Brew Crew), Schwarber (Cubs) & Markakis.

The closet thing I'd get to 'stuffing' would be Belt. But I think people understand I value defense far higher than most and he's the best defensive 1B in the game and is 3rd in offensive production (1B) this year so it's not like I'm voting for a scrub.

  3. Exciting day for International signings for the Giants! Up there with the signings of Fox and Gustavo, and I guess AnVil as well. Checkered, indeed!

Hopefully, with Bell at the helm, things will change. But,as you noted, at least the system got a whole lot stronger!

  4. Hopefully the Giants farm system will be ranked a few steps higher this off season thanks to these international signings and recent MLB draft picks. Looks promising. Got tired of hearing how bad their farm system was during their failed Stanton pursuit.
