Game Wrap 8/7/2017: Cubs 5 Giants 3

Two half-innings serve as a microcosm for this game, and really for the whole season.  Cubs First:  First 2 batters- easy outs.  Jason Heyward singles and Javier Baez hits a ball to the 421 ft sign that might have been an inside-the-park HR even if it didn't bounce away from Carlos Moncrief.  Giants Fourth:  Crawford leads off with a double.  Ryder Jones singles to put runners at 2'nd and 3'rd with no outs.  Moncrief strikes out.  Matt Moore GIDP's.  Yep, that's pretty much all you need to know about the game and the season, right there!  Key Lines:

Joe Panik 2B- 2 for 4.  BA= .266.  After hitting .216 in July, Panik is at .316 so far in August.

Jarrett Parker LF- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .289.  Parker stays hot.  He does have a long history of streakiness in the minors.

Ryder Jones 1B- 2 for 3, HR(1), HBP.  BA= .128.  Maybe this games gives Jones some traction?

Matt Moore LHP- 6 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 5.88.  You look at the K's and BB's and that's a Dominant Start.  I just can't shake the notion that a lot of batters look like they are teeing off on Moore like they know what's coming.  3 WP's and an HBP didn't help matters.

Matt Cain RHP- 3 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.22.  Cain ate some innings and gave the bullpen a rest.  The 4 H make this appearance none too convincing.

Ty Blach tries to squarer the series tonight against Jose Quintana.

  1. Cubs pitched to Posey (back to hitting 4th) with Sandoval behind him.
After losing a run that surely would have scored on Parker's ground rule double, it didn't seem too bad with Buster and PabS coming up with 2nd and 3rd, 1 out. :<(
In the 3rd, same pair with Parker on 2nd again, 1 out. :<(
In the 7th, Panik on 1st, Parker and Posey were the tying run at the plate with 1 out. :<(
CANNOT depend on one guy in baseball no matter how good he is! The protection has to actually get a hit!
A whole lot of frustration in that game, but we're getting used to it, no? :<(

    1. Except That Guy went 0 for 4 in this game.

    2. Right, that's what I meant, That Guy will have a bad game and then the next guy, the protection, has to pick Him up! Didn't happen and the Giants left too many RISP.
Interesting pitching next year for Giants: If Cueto stays Andrew Suarez, Beede, Stratton, Gregorio, Rogers, Snelton & several perhaps from AA compete for bullpen jobs? Or if Cueto rolls the dice (looking for less money and a more likely contender?), then competition for the rotation with a 4th LHP high on the list?
Eduardo Núñez continues to rock with super prospect 20-yo Rafael Devers hitting AND playing 3rd, Núñez at DH. AL pretty interesting with more than half the non-division-winners in reach of the WC.

  2. it may be best for the giants to part ways with matt moore in the offseason, i would even consider spot starting albert suarez in moore's next start and maybe give moore a mental break in the bullpen.

  3. I think the Giants should move away from Moore and Cain by purchasing their options next year. We'll have Bumgarner, Cueto (hoping for rebound), Samardzija and Blach in 4 spots of a 5-man rotation. Which I think will give us a good shot at winning since we are, despite Moore and Cain not pulling their weight, and Cueto has been pretty iffy, tied for 6th in Quality Starts. (Actually, despite their ERA not being 100% shiney, the starters have done a good job of giving us a chance and I hate to think how bad it'd be if we had a poorer rotation.)

    Moncrief's arm got a shout-out from Maddon: http://www.csnbayarea.com/giants/joe-maddon-awe-carlos-moncriefs-arm-thats-bo-jackson
