The Giants and their fans got a glimpse of what life might be like when Buster Posey's fabulous career is over, and it's not a fun state to contemplate. Key Lines:
Kelby Tomlinson 3B- 1 for 2, 2 BB. BA= .266. Pablo moved to 1B and Kelby took 3B. He reached base 3 times out of the 2-hole which is exactly what you want out of the 2-hole hitter. There just wasn't anyone behind him in the lineup to keep it moving. Kelby has an OBP of .350 on the season.
Ty Blach LHP- 2 for 2, 2B. BA= .244. Blach is a good hitting pitcher, but will only be in he lineup every 6'th game. Pretty pathetic when your pitcher gets 2 of 6 Hits and 3 of 8 Total Bases in a shutout.
Ty Blach LHP- 5.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 8/4. ERA= 4.68. Blach fell 1 out short of a QS. Didn't matter as the Giants were never going to score in this one anyway.

The Giants fly home to start a 4 game series and homestand against the Cardinals with Jack Flaherty getting making his MLB debut against Madison Bumgarner tonight.

Giants will go with a 6 man rotation when Johnny Cueto returns on Friday. 6 man rotations are intriguing, but would require each starter to go deeper into games to prevent the bullpen from collapsing, or else you have to carry fewer position players on the bench.

Last night was just terrible.
ReplyDeleteDuring the first inning they were just wearing out the Padres pitcher. I think he thew over 20 pitches that inning. Tomlinson took nine or ten pitches for his walk. We had a man on first and second. Then... Pffffttttt.....
Second inning, men on again, pitcher throwing lots of pitches.. We're going to score now... Pffffftttt....
Third inning, Tomlinson is on again! Man on first, no outs. Ends with Pence hitting into a DP... Pfftttt....
Fourth inning, the Padres pitcher has thrown like two-million pitches. Hundley gets on with a double, no men out... Pffftttt....
Fifth inning, BASES LOADED!!! Just one out! Woohoo! We're getting back into this game! Reliever comes in. Pfffttt....
Then I was done... I couldn't take it anymore. So I didn't see the 6th or later. So I at least spared myself some of the bad.
When I saw that Gorky was hitting third I knew our goose was cooked.
ReplyDeleteRosters expand tomorrow when Cueto returns to initiate the 6-man rotation.
ReplyDeleteTomorrow!
ReplyDeleteExpanded rosters!
Infield and outfield help on the way!
Who's coming?
Calixte, Hwang, Gillaspie, Williamson, Heathcott, AND perhaps a couple of real live prospects: Steven Duggar and Chris Shaw -- argh, 2 more LH bats, 4 if Heathcott and Gillaspie are included.
Oops -- where are the 40-man roster spots coming from?
Maybe time to cut some dead wood?
Call me, FO, I have some suggestions!
Before beating up on Gorkys too much, @ .324 he has been the Giants BEST hitter since the All Star break -- and by a BIG margin!
ReplyDeleteBuster is 2nd @ .286 -- the ONLY other position player above Crawford's .271!
The next best OFer is Parker @ .269, and the other CFer is @ .238, which is nearly 86 points lower.
Not enough power? He's ahead of Pence and Span in slugging average also, post ASG -- LOL which isn't saying much!
When do hitters peak. There seems to be a lot of disagreement among "experts" on the web, some starting as low as 27-28 yo and nearly everyone agreeing that 30 is for sure peak or post-peak.
ReplyDeleteAlways there are exceptions and a guy can have a great year in his 30's, but in general players are declining by 30, and not a few at 29. The difficulty is mileage plays such a significant part that there isn't a definitive answer -- most everyone can find statistics to prove whatever they want to prove.
This may be of concern to the Giants because many of this year's core players will be 30-and-over next year, including Pence, Span, Posey, Crawford, and Belt as well as Sandoval, Hernandez, Hundley, and Gillaspie.
Perhaps none of the last four will be playing for the Giants next year, and maybe that's a good thing if there are younger & able replacements. The first five, however, will be aboard and being well-paid for appearing in as many games as their bodies will let them.
Can any of them, realistically, claim to be better in 2018 than their best year was? Panik, Tomlinson, and Williamson (?) may still have a peak ahead of them, less likely is Parker, Moncrief, and Hwang, unlikely is Sandoval.
This is why several among Arroyo, Slater, Shaw, Jones, Heathcott, Gomez, and Williamson must come through. the Giants train needs to get younger before the wheels fall off.
Losing 5-0 to San Diego is the nadir of this season.
ReplyDeleteIn the South, they would call it Reconstruction.
Maybe the Giants can learn from that.
First they have to realize exactly what a nadir is.
It just don't get no worse!
Please, Lord, we's need hep!
