Game Wrap 8/15/2017: Giants 9 Marlins 4

Madison Bumgarner was not at his best but the offense piled on 6 runs over the final 3 innings to pick him up.  Key Lines:

Denard Span CF- 3 for 4, HR(8), BB, SB(9).  BA= .272.  Span is 6 for 14 over his last 3 games but is still hitting just .244 for the month of August so far.  His 8'th HR leaves him 3 short of his career high of 11 set last year.

Hunter Pence RF- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .253.  Pence is hitting .326 for the month of August so far.

Ryder Jones 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(2).  BA= .190.  Jones is looking more and more comfortable as a major leaguer.  He is hitting .270 in August so far.

Carlos Moncrief PH- 1 for 1.  BA= .313.  Moncrief should be playing himself into more looks.

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 6 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.99.  Bummy gave up 2 longballs.  1 was to Stanton who has 45 on the season.

Matt Cain will try for a series win tomorrow facing Jose Urena tomorrow morning PT.

Joe Panik was placed on the 7 day concussion DL and reports on Brandon Belt's progress are not encouraging.

  1. Belt: I'm guessing he's done for the season. Still, in a bad year he was 2 fWAR (11th in MLB 1B at this date) and is ranked the second-best defensive 1B in all of baseball while putting up +12 DRS by Fangraphs. And even in a 'bad' year with the bat, he is 15th in their offensive rankings. Not that any of that will matter to the 'get rid of Belt, the source of all our problems, crowd.'

Tomlinson: Just something funny -- Ty Blach's SLG (.297) is higher than Kelby's (.291), He really needs to hit the weights and get some pop in his bat because until forces the OF to respect him, they're going to keep playing him shallow and take away a lot of those bloops/flares.

Strickland: It was an ugly appearance. But the defense managed to bail him out though I wasn't sure if Span was going to get that deep fly.

Bumgarner: He got picked at 2B. I'm like "that was embarrassing."

    1. Problem is, every other half-season with Belt is an "off year". The guy never has and likely never will have that year where he consistently shows all his positive tools and actually becomes a force in the middle of this lineup, which could change the way the rest of the lineup clicks. That's his problem, he doesn't make anyone around him better, and that's the roll he was here to fill - impact bat in the middle of the lineup.

Bah! I'm just a humbug today.

    2. He doesn't need to be. Of course I'm not into the old-fashion, traditional batting orders. We've got enough modeling and computer power now to know Belt should hit first. But heaven forbid anyone consider it. It's like almost every fan and manager is Tevye (3rd act) from Fiddler on the Roof.

    3. Good luck with that.
Bochy is so very traditional in his leadoff batters.
Wonder, though, if eading off Belt even occurred to him.
Ever remember a 6-5 leadoff batter? Maddon has fooled around with 6-3 Anthony Rizzo leading off this year -- 13 times slashing: .545/.615/1.455 -- amazing!
In his career, Rizzo has lead off an inning 670 times slashing .277/.364/.525, but seems like a waste of power. In Belt's case that's not as big a deal, he's not Rizzo for HRs.

  2. I think it's time for Belt and Panik to seriously consider wearing helmets or at least padded hats all the time. They should be fitted for them and start trying them out now. Maybe Denard Span too, as now that I'm looking he's spent long periods on DL for a concussion and migraines.
