A check swing double down the 3B line by Jarrett Parker was the big blow in this one, driving in two runs in the 7'th inning to break open a 1-1 tie and reward the pitching staff for a well-pitched game. Key Lines:
Gorkys Hernandez CF- 2 for 3, 2 2B, HBP. BA= .272. Gorkys is hitting .359 in August after hitting .316 in July and .359 in June. A pretty remarkable run after hitting under .200 for the first 2 months of the season.
Kelby Tomlinson 2B- 2 for 4. BA= .259. Kelby is 12 for 37 since taking over the full time 2B role when Joe Panik hit the concussion DL.
Jarrett Parker LF- 1 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .263. As they say, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. The double was a check swing that found a gap between a shifted 3B and the bag and sliced into the bullpen for a double and 2 RBI's aided by Ryan Braun kicking it around once he got to it.
Brandon Crawford 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .236. Crawford ran his hit streak to 8 games and is 11 for 27 in that span.
Denard Span PH- 1 for 1, 2B. BA= .273. Span started the 2 run rally in the 7'th with a PH double.
Matt Moore LHP- 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 5.38. 3'rd QS in a row for Moore. If he finishes the season strong, do you try to trade him over the winter or keep him hoping he can put it all together next season?
Mark Melancon RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.38. Second dominant inning in a row from Melancon.
Sam Dyson RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 0 K, Save(12). ERA= 5.40. Good thing it was a 3-run lead here.

Giants get a day off before starting a 3 gamer in Arizona and something called Players Weekend, which I don't completely understand the point of. I'm sure the kids will love it, though, and that's always a good thing. Ty Blach will take on Zack Greinke in game 1.

Moore: I am really mixed. Though I will say I don't trust him to ever be the 'early Matt Moore.'
ReplyDeleteThe downside is there's always something that giving him fits. Winding up too much. Not winding up enough. The grip is wrong. The arm slot is wrong. The new arm slot is wrong. The new grip is wrong. It's constant litany of mechanics issues that he, and the pitching staffs at two clubs, haven't been able to conquer.
On the flip side, he has 12 QS now, which ties him for 40th. In a 150 starting pitcher league, that's not bad. Even if his ERA is way high. And his FIP is 4.52 and having watched the OF, I can see that the defense hasn't really helped him as it's been mostly bad (not one single OFer has a positive defensive rating at FanGraphs, so it's not just my cringing eyes) for most of the year.
So I just don't know.
Speaking of pitchers, Bumgarner's fWAR is now 1.7 in 12 starts and he's passed Blach (1.6 fWAR) whose had 21. I'm not putting down Blach, he's done a workman like job and deserves credit for it. It's just amazing how d**n good Bumgarner is even after that shoulder injury.
Dyson: When he gave up that bomb I yelled at the screen: "He's a .230 Hitter!!!!" I understand Shaw and Braun, they're both on my fantasy baseball team and they do a very good job for me (when healthy). But Vogt? Grrrr....
After the double play, after he got 3-2, with a 3-run lead, nobody on, 2 out, Dyson might have said: don't walk this dude, see if he can hit a 2-seamer after 3 4-seamers. Got it up too much.

Moore in 26 starts: received 3 or fewer runs in 14, given up 3 or fewer ERs in 15, pitch 6 or more innings in 19. There have been some real stinkers, but Giants have won 8 of his starts and lost 3 by 1 run, 5 by 2 runs, and shut out 3-0 in one. They've been in 16 (or 17) of his 26 games. Not #1 or 2 or 3 performance for a winner, but maybe what one would expect for a .400 team.
If everything goes right next year he may be the #6 starter; if not much goes wrong the #5; if it's like this year, the #2 or #3 in GS and IP.
Until next year is actually played, it's probably good to keep him just in case.
Afterall, as it worked out, Matt Duffy hasn't actually helped the Rays either. And he won't bring much. A million to let go.
Parker's double came after Tomlinson got hosed big time on a third strike call. The ball was at his ankles for crying out loud! BUT the baseball gods took care of it :-)
