A 7-run rally in the 6'th inning by the Phillies overwhelmed a pretty good night for the Giants offense which put together its own 5-run rally in the 9'th inning that fell short. Key Lines:
Denard Span CF- 2 for 4, HR(9), BB. BA= .275. Span's HR was in inside-the-park job that hit high off the bricks in Triples Alley and was literally kicked by the OF. He scored standing up and did not look to be having problems running the bases.
Pablo Sandoval 3B- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .224. Pabs also committed a throwing error that did not result in any unearned runs.
Ryder Jones 1B- 1 for 4, 3B. BA= .181. Jones continues to show flashes. He's hitting .235 with a .431 SLG% since his callup on August 2 after going 1 for 21 in his first MLB stint in June/July.
Kelby Tomlinson 2B- 1 for 2, 3 BB. BA= .260. Kelby is hitting .381, 8 for 21, in 6 games since starting at 2B for the injured Joe Panik.
Ty Blach LHP- 5.1 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 4.89. Blach's success this season was fueled by suppressing HR's that figured to regress over time. Rhys Hoskins 3-run dinger was the big blow, and the bullpen fail added 2 ER to the line in the 6'th.
Josh Osich LHP- 0.1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 0 K. ERA= 6.14. Part of a lefty reliever's job, if they are going to face more than 1 batter at a time, is to force switch-hitters to hit RH which is their more unfamiliar side. Osich faced 3 of those in a row and gave up a double and a single. He then walked the LH hitting Nick Williams. Then Boch did not have Gearrin ready in time to face Rhys Hoskins who also walked. Gearrin then came in to face a LH hitting PH with a sub-.200 BA who launched a grand slam into the arcade that was a no-doubter off the bat.
Albert Suarez RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 6.48. Suarez runs hot and cold. He was dominant here after 2 ugly appearances.

Bad -- very bad -- luck played a BIG part in the 6th: with one out (Alfaro: swinging K), Rupp hit a can-of-corn fly to center, Span broke back only to lose the ball in the sky, and it fell in front of him, not far from where he started.

Osich began to warm up. Gearrin had been throwing at the beginning of the 6th. They showed him throwing from the front of the mound, and Krukow expounded on throwing as hard as you can as quickly as you can to get ready.
Gearrin was not there when Osich began. He was finished. Jon remarked (after Perkins liner into center on Blach's 96th pitch) that Osich had replaced Gearrin.
Blach looked ok -- he was 1-2 on Perkins, his last pitch was breaking down and in, on the corner or out of the strike zone, Perkins just did a good job.
Bochy signaled for the lefty, so Gearrin must have been ready also.
Blach was talking to himself after the hit, maybe about the run scoring that shouldn't have been there. Maybe about he should have gotten the pitch further in and down. It wasn't a mistake, it's baseball.
Florimon hit the first pitch from Osich to the base of the wall in left-center, splitting Parker and Span.
Hernandez grounded out for the second out on what should have been the third out with only one run in. Except, IMO, Blach should have been in there to pitch to Florimon, a career nobody. Osich has worse numbers against RHB than Blach.
Then the Phillies poured it on.
To Bochy's defense, he's been kicked around a lot this year for leaving a pitcher in too long, he wasn't making that mistake. But Osich? The fireman with the gas can!
OTOH, Giants continue frustration in their quest for a high draft!
Osich? OMG.
Yeah, Osich was a Fahrenheit 451 fireman last night. But instead of burning books, he burned Blach.
Deletethey must consider purchasing the contract of d.j. snelten at this point. okert and osich are not working out and they will likely be released in the offseason. snelten cannot be any worse at this point!!
ReplyDeleteIf they are serious about turning it around next year, please acquire a veteran lefty for their bullpen to go With Will Smith. Osich and Okert belong in AAA!

It was 4-3 when I switched to the error-filled 49ers pre-season game. But it'd looked like Blach had found his stride when I switched. Imagine my surprise when I checked the scores this AM. Wow. But despite the wheels coming off later in the game, I'm still happy with Blach. He has 13 quality starts, despite 4 or 5 fewer appearances than most other 13 QS pitchers. He seem durable. He seems, for the most part, unflappable. He's certainly not as frustrating as Moore who has 11 QS. And for a guy only projected as a 4/5 starter/innings eater, he's done well.
ReplyDeleteTomlinson: I see the 'Little Engine that Could' is still chugging along and, frankly, with the additional playing time is gathering speed. I'm still annoyed he was 'optioned down' after spring training for some over-the-hill vets that were just nothing more than time wasters.
Osich: Sadly Osich is the only LH reliever on the active roster. We could replace him, but Okert was as bad. After that, Smith is out until next year. And except for DJ Snelten, there really isn't much in the LH reliever pipeline at this point in time to replace Osich & Okert or cover for Smith.
There are 3 fair lefties in Sacramento not on the 40-man roster: Suarez, Snelten, & Sitton. And Okert who is pitching fairly well also (in Sacramento). There's also Matt Gage who was pitching well for Richmond but not so good for Sacramento. Not good at all. Okert and Gage are on the 40-man roster.

Maybe there's method in Bochy's madness: he wants to be sure on some of these guys, like Osich.
Curtain call before the fall.
I doubt the Giants call up Suarez as he is being groomed for starting and they're working up his endurance/innings. He's had 22 starts with 141 innings so far this year. He should end up with about 25 or 26 starts and 160-ish innings this year. He's similar to Blach -- good pitches, excellent control, gets you out with his head and 4-pitch mix, not by being overwhelming.
DeleteSitton seems to be an organizational-level player who failed to impress both the Rockies and the Mariners but wants to keep the dream alive.
Snelten is, I think, about the only realistic AAA option.
