Game Wrap 7/31/2017: A's 8 Giants 5

The Giants got about all they can expect from Matt Cain these days and he left the game with a 3-2 lead after 5 innings.  That was not enough for an exhausted bullpen coming off a tough series in LA.  Key Lines:

Brandon Belt 1B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .240.  Belt ended July with a .396 OBP and a .449 SLG% for the month.

Buster Posey DH- 2 for 4.  BA= .328.  Buster's season keeps chugging along.  Unfortunately, he struck out with runners at first and third to end a 7'th inning rally when the score was 6-5.

Carlos Moncrief RF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .500.  The 28 yo Moncrief got his first major league hits a day after flipping his bat after drawing a walk in his first MLB PA.  He also is reputed to have a major cannon for an arm in the OF.

Jae-Gyun Hwang 3B- 1 for 3.  BA= .163.  Per Kruk and Kuip, when Bochy was asked why he let Hwang face Kenley Jansen when the LH hitting Joe Panik was available, he answer was that he thinks Hwang "has a nose for RBI's."  LOL Boch!  It's either time for him to retire or he ran out of &$%#'s to give a few games ago.

Matt Cain- 5 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.37.  Cainer left the game with a 3-2 lead having thrown 92 pitches.  The bullpen brought their gas cans and the lead was gone by the middle of the 6'th inning.  It might be time for some injuries to crop up in the bullpen to get these guys a breather with a full 1/3 of the season left to play.

Jeff Samardzija faces lefty Sean Manaea in game 2 of the Oakland leg of the series.

As if the Giants needed more bad news, Johnny Cueto exited his rehab start in San Jose with the dreaded forearm tightness.  Stay tuned on THAT one!

  1. Cueto: Well, I guess he's not going to be opting out. Hopefully he'll rehab well from TJ (which I'm assuming is coming down the pike) and regain most of his excellence. From what I've read, in the end, two of every three continue their career on their normal 'pitching track' while the other third end-up pretty bad and retiring, if not just forced out due to their poor performance.

Hwang: I think it's time to pull the plug and call up Ryder Jones. Hwang's on a one-year deal. I appreciate the Giants, and Hwang, taking the shot. I wish things would have worked out better. But we need to clean-up the black-hole at 3B and he's not a long-term solution and Jones could be that guy.

Shaw: Time to cut some deadwood off the 40-man (Gillespie - DFA, Morse - 60-day) and give that young man a shot. Also, because he's adequate at 1B (but I doubt Brandon Belt good) he could fill in there (match-up/rest) as well and give Posey a bit more rest.

  2. I slapped my forehead when Kontos was brought in with the bases loaded, I knew nothing good was gonna come from that. I agree with Hwang, he just doesn't have it. Bat looks slow and he looks like he has no approach at the plate. Bosch and the Giants need to give the kids a shot. They won 3 world series with kids like Posey, Bumgarner, Sandoval, Wilson, Panik, Duffy, Crawford, Belt, etc. a chance to prove themselves. I know some of our kids aren't as sure of a bet as those prospects, but some of the guys I mentioned were not exactly studs themselves. How ever you want to put it, baptism by fire, sink or swim, we need to see what these kids can do.

  3. Time to bring Law, Snelton, and Rogers from Sac. Andrew Suarez, too.
Maybe Cyr, Alvarado, Flores, Gage, and Hall from Richmond.
No more gas cans on the mound!

  5. Thank you Doc for seeing the hilarity in the "he's got a nose for RBIs" statement. At the time he had 4.

I agree with MosesZD. It's time to pull the plug. And if they don't bring Jones up right away, I'd love to see Tomlinson get five or six starts there. I think folks would be surprised.

  6. Can anyone explain why Hundley is playing?
It's not for showcasing to do a waiver-trade -- he's a completely known commodity, he's not going to improve with exposure, he doesn't have to play to be traded.
Tuesday he's pinch-hitting! Is that to help the Giants? Has it gotten so bad that he's the best option to be in the lineup? What about Miguel Gomez?
Why is Hwang playing? Has he found a new bat without a hole in it? He's the poster child for over matched!
Don't have a DH? How about Bumgarner? He actually might hit the elusive HR the Giants have forgotten how to hit.
Management skills seem to be digressing along with hitting and relief pitching.
Is it within MLB rules to be playing for worst record?
