Down on the Farm: 8/11/2017

AAA  Sacramento River Cats quieted the Salt Lake City Bees:

Jose Flores RHP- 5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K, GO/AO= 7/1.  ERA= 3.09.

-This Flores guy seems like he might be a find.  In 8 starts since his promo to AAA, he's struck out 46 batters against 13 BB's in 46.2 IP.  He also keeps the ball on the ground.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels edged out the Reading Fightin' Phils 5-4:

Caleb Gindl CF- 2 for 4, HR(4).  BA= .301.
Dylan Davis LF- 1 for 2, HR(8), BB.  BA= .221.
Sam Coonrod RHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.80.

High A  San Jose Giants busted the Modesto Nuts 6-2:

Bryan Reynolds DH- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .313.
Matt Winn C- 3 for 4, 2 2B, BB.  BA= .242.
Jalen Miller 2B- 2 for 5.  BA= .222.
Shaun Anderson RHP- 5.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.08.
Carlos Diaz LHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.47.

-After some bad luck in his first SJ Giants appearance, Anderson did not allow an ER in 9.2 IP in his next 2 appearances with 8 K's and 0 BB.

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Vancouver Canadians 6-2:

Malique Ziegler CF- 2 for 3, HR(3), BB.  BA= .275.
Logan Baldwin LF- 3 for 4, SB(10).  BA= .385.
Jason Bahr RHP- 5 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 3.81.
Alejandro De La Rosa RHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 5.11.
Tyler Schimpf RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 7.04.

-Malique Ziegler breaks out of a prolonged slump.
-5 K's in 2 IP will catch my eye in a pitching line no matter the pitcher's ERA. Schimpf has 8 K's in 4 scoreless IP over his last 2 appearances.

AZL  Brewers outscored the Giants 7-5:

Heliot Ramos DH- 2 for 5, HR(5).  BA= .342.
Yoiber Marqina CF- 1 for 5, 2B.  BA= .200.
Jeffrey Parra C- 3 for 4.  BA= .381.

-Yoiber Marquina is a new name.  His milb.com bio says he was a pitcher in the Cleveland Indians organization for the past 3 seasons and actually put up pretty impressive K rates.  Now he shows up in an AZL Giants boxscore as a CF.

  1. Yoiber Marquina isn't on the AZL Giants roster or in the box score. I'm guessing there was an error somewhere and they've corrected it. Ismael Munguia played CF and went 1 for 5 with a double. I'm guessing they just got the last name wrong on some look-up table.

I'm taking it, from his line, that Coonrod has now gone to the pen. I kind of understand it. He fell apart after May 5th and his ERA ballooned big-time and he hasn't been able to bring it back down as a starter.

  2. How does a guy (like Jose Flores) learn to pitch at 28 yo? A new pitch? A new coach? Strength? Way back he was over 9K/9, but hasn't been close until this year. At 6'3" 250#, he's got size, but hasn't pitched a lot of innings in 9 years + 2 DSL, this year already being his high. Was a starter when 17-18 yo, then a reliever until this year.
I guess some learn, some don't.
