2012 NLDS Live Blog: Giants vs Reds Game 2

Game on TNT due to rain delay in Baltimore.  Looks like a cooler foggier evening in SF.

MadBum says he's got his mechanics back.  We'll see.  He's come up big in the past.  Just seems like this pitching staff is running on fumes for the past month or so.

Took care of Phillips quickly.  Looks like he's ready go pound the inside corner against the righties.

Busted Cozart twice in the inside for the K.

And he K's Votto too!  Dominant first inning for Bummy, but Cainer looked good in the first last night too.

Another at'em ball by Pagan.

So far, Arroyo seems to be up in the zone and the Giants are teeing off but hitting em right at the OF's.

Gotta think if Arroyo stays up in the zone like that the Giants will score some runs tonight.  Ball may not have as much carry tonight though.

Dang it!  So far it's a replay of last night's game!  Same song second verse, could get better but it's gonna get worse!

Sorry, took a dinner break there.  Might be time to just tip our hats to the Reds and say they are the better team.  Looking like  a short postseason for the Gmen.  How's that for generating reverese karma?

I really think this pitching staff has been running of fumes for awhile now and it's showing in these two games.  Maybe having the 5 rotation members go wire-to-wire starting all but 2 games isn't such a good thing?

And Kontos gets the DP ground ball!  Think he'll be on next year's team?

No way should Arroyo be pitching a perfecto with the stuff he's throwing up there.

And Belt breaks the spell!

Pagan shows his frustration there.  Arroyo is proving you can go up in the zone if you keep it up at the top.  Hitters will just get under it and pop it up.  As the game has gone on, he's mixed in sinkers for GB outs.  With the low pitch count, he could take this one all the way.

Did they really have to show a tape of The Collision?  I hate that tape!!

This is turning into an old fashioned butt kicking!  Gotta feel a bit bad for Mijares.  That must really stink to get your big chance to shine in a big game like this and then mess the bed in front of millions of TV viewers.

OK,  time to put this game out of its misery.  Thanks for stopping by and reading, especially those who commented.

Full Game Wrap in the morning.  I don't think it's going to take much time to write it.

  1. Thanks for telling us it's on TNT. I would have missed the game.

  2. Alright. Six innings to mount a comeback. 4-0 ain't bad if you say it fast. Something is going to break for the French Vanilla.

  3. Kontos. Who knew?

    Arroyo. Even more so.

Tough being on this side of it.

  4. Well, wow, nice for Timmy.

We looked like the Keystone Cops getting him in there, though. This team is out-of-sync.

    1. Agreed Shank. But, it's going to break in Cincy.

Some virgins need to be sacrificed and a few Indian burial grounds need to be undesecrated first.

    2. You have more faith than I do. I've been accused many times of being a Kool Aid drinker and Sabean Jock sniffer and a lot of other things even worse, but I know a team that's out of gas when I see one.

    3. Well, it got much worse. We'll see what happens in Cincy.

    4. Caught your timing on the original comment Shank. Game was not out-of-hand then.

Alright, this will have to be the LEGEND of Vogelsong if things turn.

  6. this series is over

pence is not worth the money he is paid

    the pen is an issue

at least we got to see a bit of vintage timmy

up to vogey to keep from getting swept....have a feeling he will be spitting fire...but wont matter much if they still cant score

    1. Not over.

      We're getting on a plane.

Pen IS in shambles though. Giants need to look around and see what other pens are made of. Cause we ain't got it.

    2. Series is over when its over. The Gints lack of fight tonight sucked. I was expecting either Cain or MadBum to step up big. I totally agree that seeing vintage Timmy was the highlight of the night.

The pen - Casilla is a good 7th inning guy. He won't close. The pen needs an alpha dog to put order into it. I think Mota and his rubber arm are just about done. I didn't like Bochy running that out - keep the game at 4 at all costs. On the bright side, the Greek looks good and they have complete cost control.

Pence - I have always been a big fan but even I have to admit his fielding and hitting have been terrible. Its not really a short sample anymore. The throw to the plate instead of the cutoff was bad mojo with only the one run in and down 2-0.

Mainly Pagan and Scutaro going cold, or hitting the ball right at the Reds, really hurts the offense.

I bet Vogey keeps it close, but the offense has to get something going or it'll cave in. Stranger things have happened though, and the G's haven't caught a break yet.

  7. Agreed, series is over when its over, but history is against the GMEN.. They ran into a hot pitcher tonight and you gotta tip your cap to the Reds offense the 1st 2 games.

Bullpen-they did an excellent job during the regular season helping them win the West.. But I hope Sabean addresses the bullpen in the offseason by getting a closer (either righty or lefty) and another reliable righthanded reliever to go with Casilla & Romo.

Pence-fielding and hitting have been bad, but I still can't see Sabean not bringing him back for 2013.. The alternatives in the FA market are not attactive at all and who knows if Pence has a career year next year...

This team has played well on the road losing 1 series against the Bums out of the last 10 so I hope they make it interesting.. Regardless, I've enjoyed following this team winning the West.. They've overcome alot of adversity, and provided many exciting moments this season.. lets hope there is still more to come..

  8. I really like Pence and have been waiting for him to show up. He came in with a great attitude. (Tough after being a deadline deal twice in two years.) But, yeah, he's just missed.

I can't imagine the Giants won't be in for one more year on Hunter. They would have to have something else solidly in place if they let him go. Can't see that.

Being handled like this at home is tough. Absolutely love the fans that stayed and made a ton of noise in the 9th.

And yeah, after seeing Bochy make all the right moves in 2010, we're seeing some misfires this year.

Can't see any answers that go beyond miracles and magic in Cincy...but, never know.

    1. Pence has been paid at the full season rate of roughly $17.3M for his first two arb seasons, so I expect that to continue for 2013, which would put his 2013 salary at $13.8M (under the theory that first arb is 40%, second arb is 60%, third arb is 80%). He seems to like it here, and if the Giants offer him a 3 year deal with an option, that might be sweet enough to get him to sign. Not sure how much he would want, but as a guy stuck with a losing team for so many years, then seeing how the old Phillies team collapsed the past two years, he might want to stick around with the young Giants and be able to get settled in an area as well. Maybe $14M/$16M/$18M or $48M? Plus $2M buyout option for a fourth year at $18M?

That is probably richer than I would normally be OK with, but with the signing of the big MLB TV contracts adding big money to their coffers, I think that is a minor overpay to keep a good hitter with us long-term, covering most of Cain's time left on his contract.

And at worse, we sign him to an arbitration deal for 2013 and work on a new deal with him during the season, we certainly will not non-tender him.
