Game Wrap 10/3/2012: Dodgers 5 Giants 1

Clayton Kershaw shut down the Giants offense and the bullpen gave up some runs, all a day late and a dollar short for the Dodgers.  Key Lines:

Giants Offense- 3 hits:  Scutaro, Sandoval(2B), Hector(2B).

Ryan Vogelsong- 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 3.37.  Strong start from Vogey.  Gonna be hard to justify leaving him out of the postseason rotation.

George Kontos- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.47.  Kontos deserves a postseason roster spot.

Clayton Kershaw- 8 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 2.53.  Kershaw pitched a typical Kershaw start.  Not sure why.  I read somewhere there was something about him being in contention for the Cy Young.  Hope he didn't suffer any more damage to his hip.

So, the 2012 regular season schedule is in the books.  Giants finish with 94 wins, 8 games ahead of the Dodgers.

Giants get 2 days to prepare to host the first 2 games of the NLDS facing the Cincinnati Reds.  Matt Cain faces Johnny Cueto.  It will be a tough, tough series.  Cincy has a strong lineup and a pitching staff that rivals the Giants.  More on that later.

A's sweep Texas to win the AL West.

Savvy Vets wins the Baseball Addicts Unite fantasy baseball league!

  2. bochy wont announce anything till tomorrow

putting vogey in the pen is a waste, especially since it might be better to give timmy an entire week off anyway

kershaw wont win the cy young...he can cry me a river

the a's of 2012 have the most amazing baseball story since.....the a's of 2002...maybe even greater, as that team still had actual names

this is major league come to life

the real moneyball...with an unwanted assist by sabey sabes

ordered by his owner to dump everything, so that unsweet lew could once again prove that he could not field a winner...beane did exactly that

prob is, beane isnt good at getting no value for his trades

he improved his pitching staff, got undervalued players with heart, restocked his farm system...and it all clicked

whether this team goes deep into the playoffs isnt the point...no one expected them to be where they are...and it isnt a fluke

so while both the halos and the bums tried to buy there way in, the team with a payroll that would barely pay for a third of either team...is going

    1. It is a fluke.

Otherwise, they would have done it every year.

For example, they might trade away a few of their starters this offseason and become even stronger next year, if the formula is that simple.

If everything was really so predictable, they would not have signed Colon.

    2. I was talking here a little while ago about Vogelsong in the playoff rotation. (To OGC I think?)

Who do you trust more right now? Vogey, Zito or Lincecum.

For me, it's not even close. Vogelsong easily.

Unfortunately, because Timmy and Zito seem disinclined/disabled to contribute from the pen, will Ryan be forced into it? I hope not.

  3. I don't believe this! The Giants have been having an EPIC! season then the A's one-up them with this amazing comeback of the ages to grab the Division Title. I wonder if the Rangers are going to collapse in the wild card game to whoever they are playing, to fall short like that, when all they needed to do was win one game of three, has to be very demoralizing.

Maybe the A's can finally make it to the World Series and the Giants pay them back by winning their second World Series titles in three seasons. But I'll be just as glad if they lose in the ALDS and be eliminated in the first round once again.

Sounds like they are giving up on San Jose for now, according to Mattier and Ross on KCBS and of the SF Chronicle, the A's are currently negotiating an extension with the Coliseum for five years, and if I recall a Wolfe quote, it takes 3 years to build a stadium, so it appears that they don't expect a resolution with the Giants for at least another two seasons, for it is no use to extend to a season that you think you might have a new stadium ready.

    1. Oakland will have no major league professional sports inside of ten years.

Honestly, what is the San Jose Jackpot, anyway? Nothing could be quite so wondrous as to sacrifice another 5 YEARS in the Coliseum.

I'm not sure why the A's aren't looking around. Montreal, Vancouver, Mexico City, Austin. New York City. Tokyo. Get creative.

Want San Jose? Hire Boras and get him on it. MLB loses every time they go up against him. (And MLB ultimately profits from the "loss.")

The A's need to stop looking like a beggar at the banquet of MLB riches.

It IS fun watching A's fans though. No corporate cell phone types. Regular blue collar people in T-shirts. And true nuts. Not the rubber chicken/panda hat type marketed-to nuts. Real, true fanatics. Reminds me of fans from 80's. Like a time machine watching their fans.

  5. Can't think the Giants are favored in this playoff run. I'm with you Doc. Giants gave me a WS win in my lifetime. And with a team I really, really liked. Anything else is pure frosting.

Looks like we have the 4th best pitching in the playoffs. (I'll put the lads ahead of the Cards, but that's it.) So, if we get this done, this is going to be a whole different animal from '10.

Love to see the Giants get it done with Vogelsong. Such a amazing Giant story that came together a year too late. Comes back to the team that drafted him (begs to come back so he doesn't have to pitch for the Dodgers) and does such an amazing job. Like to see him play a huge part in any playoff success we might have this year.

  6. Great comments, everybody! IMO, Timmy should be the odd man out of the postseason rotation.

Cincy's pitching looks very tough to me. I don't know of the Reds or Nats pitching is better than the Giants, but thehy are definitely not worse.

A's have done much better than I expected. Great story. This is the year Moneyball should have been written about. Not ready to crown Billy King quite yet. He ran the table on a series of trades. They haven't always worked out that way for him. Gotta tip your hat for this year though.
