The Giants lineup, led by Mike Yastrzemski, staked Drew Pomeranz to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning only to see him give back 6 in the bottom of the inning. Yaz got them even with his first dinger of the season in the second inning but Pomeranz gave up two more runs and couldn't get out of the inning. That was all the scoring in the game until the O's tacked on 1 more for good measure in the 7'th. Key Lines:
Mike Yastrzemski LF/RF- 2 for 4, 3B, HR(1), BB. BA= .273. Have a game, Yaz! Yaz the Younger stroked the ball with authority off RHP Andrew Cashner in his first 2 AB's. I am sure he bought himself some more rope with this performance. That is a sweet looking swing!
Buster Posey C- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .253. Buster has been slumping, hitting just .208 over his last 7 games and .245 over his last 15.
Steven Duggar CF- 2 for 3. BA= .242. Duggar's sharp groundball single through the left side with the bases loaded capped the 5-run first inning with 2 RBI's.
Drew Pomeranz LHP- 1.1 IP, 6 H, 8 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 8.08. The FB sat at 92 but again the secondary stuff wasn't there and he made way too many locations mistakes with the FB. Pomeranz pitched 6 shutout innings on April 24. Since then he's giving up 25 ER in 14.1 IP and failed to complete 3 innings in 3 of 5 starts. Giants have too decide if he can get back to where he was on 4/24, but he should not start another game until whatever is wrong is fixed.
Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 4.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 9/1. ERA= 4.34. DRod's fastball didn't seem to have much on hit but he located it and had a couple of nasty secondary pitches. He's probably in line to take Pomeranz next start.
Derek Holland LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 6.75. Holland and Buster didn't seem to happy with each other but Holland actually looked pretty sharp. Baby steps!

Shaun Anderson tries to get back on track today after a rough last start facing RHP David Hess who has had his own struggles with a 6.71 ERA.

What a great top of the first.
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrible ensuing EIGHT innings.
After the first 2 batters hit safely in the second including Yaz the Younger's first HR, the Giants got Duggar's bunt single in the next 23 outs before Belts 2-out single in 9th.
One outfield single and one bunt in 8 innings! Against the worst team (?) in baseball?
Would the real worst team please stand up?
Yaz the kid (28 years old) traded a BAT for the HR ball!
If I had the ball, I would promise Yaz the Younger the ball for a reasonable cost but I'd want to think about something of his grandfather's, if only a pair of worn-out cleats.
Geez, what a shellacking on all fronts!
This person will skip any future start by Drew the rotten pomegranate or whatever a pomeranz really is!
If the Giants were to commit to a rebuild today, realistically how long would it take to become a contender and who on the current active roster would be around when they were a solid .500+ team again?
ReplyDeleteLooking at the emerging team rosters, very few 30+ yo position players are contributing much. There are exceptions scattered about, but if it takes 4 years -- contender in 2022 would be quick -- only Duggar has a reasonable chance to be part of it although Longoria would be in the final year of his contract (save the buyout for 2023) and assuming a Posey buyout that year.
If 2022 is even realistic, is any position player older than 26 now a realistic candidate to be a contributing member in 4 years when he is past his 30th birthday?
Those on the 40-man who are younger than 27 and controllable include Duggar, Avelino, Shaw, Slater, R. Jones, A. Garcia, and Farhan's Michael Reed. Are any of these other than Duggar a "core" player?
Can that "core" be augmented with Bart, Ramos, Luciano (too young?), Canario, Quinn, Fabian, J. Gonzales, Howard, Miller, Heyward, Geraldo, Rinconces, Hinojosa, and Bond to contend (by 2022)?
Can the Giants get ANY MLB TOP 100 prospect for anyone on the roster past Bumgarner and Smith, sweetening with some of players like Sandoval, Panik, Austin, and Pillar who have a little value but won't be around in 2022?
Could any of the "core" be moved if those with "no-trade" clauses consented?
Most importantly, would the Giants actually "run up the flag"?
No matter what, the Face of the Giants, Buster Posey, should be kept.
Zaidi must have liked the abrupt change in Yaz the Younger's GO/AO ratio and maybe though Yaz was a Latter Day Justin Turner or a potential Max Muncy.
ReplyDeleteThe "kid" looks good out there, so let's hope!
Without better choices, keep throwing stuff at the wall and see what sticks.
