Scouting the 2019 Draft: Rounds 31-40 Review

Anyone who thinks the MLB draft needs to be 40 rounds should look at how many of the players drafted in the 31-40 range with full knowledge by the drafting team they would not sign.

Round 31, Pick #926.  Tyler Wyatt RHP, College(Grand Canyon).  5'11", 185 lbs.  College Senior.  Wyatt played infield for Grand Canyon and hit .275 with 7 HR's and 11 SB's.  Last pitched in 2017 0.2 IP.  Last significant work as a pitcher was 2016.  Giants drafted him as a pitcher.

Round 32, Pick #956.  Dylan Brewer OF, HS.  B-L, T-L.  6'3", 165 lbs.  No scouting report.  Two way HS player committed to Clemson.  Unlikely to sign.

Round 33, Pick #986.  Nolan Dempsey 2B, College(Fresno St).  B-R, T-R.  6'0", 175 lbs.  .343/.395/.552, 17 2B, 2 3B, 7 HR.  College senior. Local kid who went to Junipero Serra HS with Hunter Bishop.

Round 34, Pick #1016.  Morgan Colopy OF, HS.  B-R, T-R.  6'1", 210 lbs.  Per PG:  Corner OF prospect with some power projection.  Good Student.  Committed to Cincinnati.  Unlikely to sign.

Round 35, Pick #1046.  Brooks Lee SS, HS.  B-S, T-R.  6'1", 185 lbs.  Let's just say there's a reason why MLB Pipeline's #37 ranked draft prospect would fall to the 35'th round.  He's not signing!  Attended San Luis Obispo HS.  Staying home to play for Cal Poly.

Round 36, Pick #1076.  Cameron Repetti 3B, HS.  B-R, T-R.  6'3", 205 lbs.  Great size for a 3B.  Power potential.  Good Student committed to Cal State Fullerton.  Unlikely to sign.

Round 37, Pick #1106.  Cole Weiss 3B, College(UNC Wilmington).  B-L, T-R.  6'4", 200 lbs.   .316/.397/.449.  Nice size with some power projection.  Hit .293 in the West Coast League with wood bats.  College Junior.  Will he sign?

Round 38, Pick #1136.  Will Rigney RHP, HS.  6'5", 200 lbs.  Ranked #80 draft prospect by MLB Pipeline.  Tweeted a thanks but no thanks to the Giants and said he is going to college at Baylor.

Round 39, Pick #1166.  Chris Lanzilli OF, College(Wake Forest).  B-R, T-R.  6'2", 215 lbs.  .350/.415/.637, 16 HR.  Draft eligible sophomore with terrific power.  I assume there is a reason he fell to Round 39.  Unlikely to sign.

Round 40, Pick #Jeff Heinrich 3B, JC.  B-R, T-R.  6'0", 200 lbs.  He's going to try to raise his stock by transferring to SEC South Carolina.

  1. Picking college seniors is a good strategy if you just want to fill the "rosters" with bodies!

  2. Brooks Lee's father is the coach of Cal Poly. I went to Cal Poly for undergrad and masters, its a great school. But, when you compare what a the number 37 overall pick gets paid to the $9,075 /yr tuition fee, thats a no brainer.

Still pretty cool he gets to play for his dad(hard to put a value on that). Hope he stays healthy and it all works out for him!

    1. Hasn't he been coached by his dad since he could hold a baseball?
His father is highly respected at Cal Poly and makes 6-figure money -- more than an A-ball manager -- but doesn't the time for another look come? Cal Poly plays at a high level but is it equivalent to what a first round pick would see in pro ball. Would a pro team just let it's multi-million $ investment go uncoached.
      Dumb move by both IMO

  3. Leverage for high school players is largely dependent on their socioeconomic status and their ability as a student. Lee has the resources to pass on a ~$1.5m signing bonus because his family has the resources to support him in college. As a state college employee, his dad would get him free tuition without a scholarship.

There’s so many things at play here to label it as “dumb”. He will get high level competition without the pressure of a-ball travel and he’ll get an education.

I have a friend who is an agent and I asked where his son would have to be drafted to skip college. He said it 100% depends on the kid. If Lee is confident his grades will hold and he’ll get reps, it’s a sound decision.
