Game Wrap 6/6/2019: Mets 7 Giants 3

A meltdown 8'th inning by Mark Melancon ruined a Quality Start by Shaun Anderson and a chance to finish the road trip with a winning record.  Key Lines:

Pablo Sandoval 3B- 1 for 4, HR(8).  BA= .285.  Pabs' solo blast into the upper deck in Citi Field off Zack Wheeler in the 6'th inning gave the Giants a temporary lead 3-2.

Brandon Belt 1B- 1 for 4, HR(9).  BA= .246.  Pabs was on base in front of Belt in the 4'th inning after grounding into a force out.  Belt took Wheeler deep to left-CF to tie the game.

Shaun Anderson RHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 9/2.  ERA= 4.18.  Things did not look good for Anderson in the first inning when he gave up HR's to the first 2 batters, but he settled down to go six.  He actually left the game with a 3-2 lead in the 7'th but with a runner on 1B and no outs.  Reyes Moronta allowed the inherited runner to score tying the game.

Mark Melancon RHP- 1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 3.70.  Melancon had allowed just 1 run in his last 9 appearances and innings.  Just when you think it's safe.......

The Giants return home to Oracle Park to face the Hated Ones in a weekend series.  Drew Pomeranz gets the first start tomorrow evening facing Clayton Kershaw.  That should be fun!

  1. This game left a bad taste. Shaun Anderson is trying to establish himself in MLB, battling back after rough 1st inning to pitch a good game, being in line for the win, but the bullpen, which has been a strength totally meltsdown. Anderson is showing he's got some 'bulldog' in him which bodes well for his future development.

  2. Attendance will be interesting tonight. Giants sit mid pack in the NL for draw, and the Dodgers, Kershaw, and Margaritaville T-shirts should bring in the faithful, but the last Dodger series averaged only 32,000.
For the season, SF attendance is runnining under 30,000 per game and will draw the lowest crowd figure since Candlestick days.
Sad if Bochy's last year sets loss records and the lowest attendance since the 1990's.
Hopefully 3 rings will cheer him up.

    1. It is a little surprising how dramatically attendance has fallen off. I always thought "Win a ring and fans will come forever." So they won three, and five years later...wow.

Shouldn't condemn fans though. This is not an entertaining team. No stars. (Former stars who've faded and are pretty average, at best.) No milestones. No shot at winning. No excitement. Even the most casual fan can see what's on the field.

I was out there for the previous dark years (06-08). I got better seats, but still the yard was mostly full. Now...seems almost like a ghost town. I guess I thought the park's magic would hold.

And, yeah, while I'm ranting, it's a little bit of a bummer that I have to call it "the park." With all the name changes over the years, it doesn't feel like it has a name. I get the finances of sponsorship. But still, if there can be a Dodger Stadium, there can be a Giants Park. Or a Willie Mays Stadium. If I felt a little bit more warm and fuzzy and nostalgic about the ballpark, it would be easier to go out there and watch this team. Seems silly. But Candlestick Park, as horrible as it was, was "The Stick." There was a connection.

      Anyway, sorry for the rant.

  3. I'll be there tonight, with my wife and daughters. On California vacation, from Iowa. Go Giants!
