Game Wrap 6/5/2019: Mets 7 Giants 0

The Giants offense went flat against LHP Jason Vargas who scattered 5 hits in a complete game shutout while Tyler Beede was not able to replicate his success in his last start.  Key Lines:

Tyler Beede RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 5 K.  ERA= 8.15.  This line is too familiar with the obvious control/command issues.

Jason Vargas LHP- 9 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 3.57.  Vargas allowed just 1 run in 7 IP agains the Dodgers his last start so maybe the Giants just caught him on a hot streak, but Vargas is simply not this good as a pitcher.  5 different Giants hitters got 1 hit apiece.  The Giants also did not get more than 1 hit in any inning and had 2 GIDP's.

Shaun Anderson tries for a series Win tomorrow AM facing former Giants first round draft pick, Zach Wheeler.  Yeah.  Don't.  Even!

Mac Williamson is going to get a chance to prove the Giants gave up on him too soon.  The Mariners signed him to a minor league contract then immediately selected the contract and put him on their 25 man active roster.

  1. Big Mac starting fast again....Just watched him hit a 3 run HR to dead center in his 1st Seattle AB...Hope he can follow thru and becomes the power hitter we all hoped for even if on another team..He deserves it

  2. And Mac Williamson hits a 3 run homer, pinch hitting, in his first at bat as a Mariner. Good for him. Can't say that the Giants didn't give him adequate opportunities, however.

    1. I think Mac wanted a fresh start himself, especially when things started going south in his last call up.

  3. i'm wondering if they consider revisit using an opener for beede after tonight's start. moronta and gott would be my two choices to open for beede.

    1. Not sure why...it was the 4th inning when he fell apart.

  4. It's not like the Giants can't be patient with Beede, although it's fair to say they have been patient with him for years.
Aramís García might have a little to do with it also, he doesn't have much major league experience and is 2-5 in the 7 games he's started as catcher.
Who would be the 5th starter? Pomeranz, Holland, Blach, Suarez, and Beede have all stunk. There's a reason Beede is getting a chance: what you get from the other 4 is predictable and not good.
Give him another shot with Vogt who is 4-0 in his last 4 starts and caught Beede's Miami game.

  5. Since Bumgarner was picked in 2007, the Giants have drafted 260 pitchers in the June amateur draft before last year's picks of Hjelle and Wong.

What do they have to show for all those picks?

Some were traded: Hembree, Wheeler, Crick, Bickford

Some are still around: Black, Blach, Beede, Coonrod, Suarez, Okert

Others have come and gone: Law, Heston, Stratton, Big Joe Biagini (career 1.0 WAR in his 4th year with Toronto)

Who else: Logan Webb, Seth Corry, Garrett Williams, Chase Johnson, Pat Ruotolo are in the system

Is that a good record? No Aces, very few good ones, a few promises, some ho-hum but they made the major leagues.
Don't know but it doesn't seem very good.

Strategy: pick a few each year and sign FAs.
