Game Wrap 6/1/2019: Giants 8 Orioles 2

The Giants offense produced more than enough runs to support a strong Quality Start by rookie Shaun Anderson.  Key lines:

Mike Yastrzemski RF/LF- 1 for 3, BB, SF.  BA= .280.  YtY(Yaz the Younger) continues to impress and has at least established a beachhead in the majors.

Buster Posey DH- 1 for 3, HR(3), 2 BB.  BA= .257.  Buster's HR was a poke to RF that probably would not have been out of Oracle Park.  He came out of the game late with hammy soreness after pushing it to try to beat out a grounder in his final AB.  He is DTD for now.

Brandon Belt LF/1B- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .241.  Belt drove in 2 runs with each of his hits.  He has an 8-game hit streak in which he is 9 for 29(.310).  His OBP in the same stretch is .394.

Kevin Pillar CF/RF- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .220.  Pillar's doubles started two rallies out of the 9-hole in a DH lineup.

Shaun Anderson RHP- 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 11/2.  ERA= 4.09.  This was the first time a Giants SP went 7 innings since Madison Bumgarner on April 13.  He pounded the zone with heavy sink all afternoon which is what he's done all along in the minors on his way up.  Here's what's great about this:  Per Maria Guarded of sfgiants.com, after his last rough start, he got feedback from Pitching Coach Curt Young, Bullpen Coach Matt Herges and Buster Posey, processed that information and used it to make adjustments that produced a dominant start.  Developing Shaun Anderson into a SP who can eat innings and turn out Quality Starts is a huge step toward a brighter future for the Giants.  Today was a huge step in that process.

Jeff Samardzija tries to get his season back on track tomorrow for a series win against RHP Gabriel Ynoa.

Pitching Coach Curt Young had knee surgery so Bullpen Coach Matt Herges will assume interim Pitching Coach duties and Steve Kline gets called up from AAA to be the Bullpen Coach.  Hmm......

Mac Williamson cleared waivers and elected free agency.  IMO, some team out there made a mistake in not claiming him.  I hope he finds a good place and finds the success that seemed so close yet eluded him in SF.

Giants HOF Manager Bruce Bochy announced that the Giants would simply skip Drew Pomeranz' next start due to an off day.  He said he did not know what would happen after that.  Heck, for all Boch knows, Madison Bumgarner might not be on the team after that!

  1. I've liked reading Bochy's comments about what a competitor Anderson is on the mound. Look forward to watching him pitch in the future. As some might know, Giants scouting director Michael Holmes tragically lost his wife this week to breast cancer. He previously worked with Zaidi in the A's organization. Just saw on twitter that Zaidi invited members of the A's front office/scouting dept to the Giants pre draft workout so that they could spend some time with Holmes, which is an incredibly kind gesture on Zaidis part. Its just nice to see stories like this that put the Giants organization in a good light.

  2. Anderson Beede Rodriguez Medina Wong 2020 SF rotation, Jerez, Bergen, Selman, Gott, Adon, Moronta, Coonrod in the bullpen. All young and promising pitchers - trade, cut or option the rest. Could Yaz be for real?

  3. Should mock trades for Bum consider his "no trade" exclusion of most all high ranked teams? He did not include NL West teams (would they dare trade a long term asset for a short term one?) nor unexpected contenders such as Minnesota (who figured?) and Tampa Bay (failure of Sale and Boston bolsters the Rays). Giants have made significant trades with these two in the not too distant past.
