Down on the Farm: 8/29/2016

AAA  Reno Aces trumped the Sacramento River Cats 6-1:

Mac Williamson LF- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .273.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels blanked the Hartford Yard Goats 4-0:

Christian Arroyo 2B- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .276.
Chris Shaw 1B- 1 for 4, HR(5).  BA= .242.
CJ Hinijosa SS- 3 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .251.
Tyler Beede RHP- 9 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 11 K's.  ERA= 2.87.

The big news here is obviously the best start of Beede's pro career, a CG shutout in which he threw just 94 pitches and hit 98 MPH on the radar gun in the 9'th inning per milb.com.  After the game, he said his strategy was to pitch to contact with the FB early in the count then use secondary stuff for strikeouts if he got to 2 strikes.  He also said that after last year's weak finish, he adopted the motto "Finish Strong" for this season and boy, did he ever?!  I think we see here why the Giants were willing to give up Bickford and not Beede at the trade deadline.

High A  San Jose Giants were idle.

*********************************************************************************

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets were idle.

Short Season  Salem-Keiser Volcanoes buried the Vancouver Canadians 13-4:

Woody Edwards CF- 1 for 3, 2 BB, SB(2).  BA= .278.
Manuel Geraldo 3B- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .295.
Heath Quinn RF- 1 for 2, HR(9), 2 BB, HBP.  BA= .330.
Kevin Rivera 2B- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .320.
Zack Bowers C- 3 for 4, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .215.
Julio Pena LF- 2 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .236.
Garrett Williams LHP- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 4.63.

Williams gave up a leadoff triple in the first inning that eventually scored, but settled down to shut out the Canadians over the next 5 innings. I've said it before:  Geraldo and Rivera are 2 young infielders you don't hear anything about in the national minor league media who I am fairly bullish on.

*********************************************************************************

The rookie Arizona League's season is complete.  The Giants missed the playoffs by 0.5 games finishing the second half 16-11, good for second place.  They were 12-16 in the first half finishing in last place.

*********************************************************************************

The DSL season is in the books.  The Giants finished with a 40-30 record, good for 3'rd place in their division and out of the playoffs.

  1. With Beede performance any chance we see Beede in our rotation sometime next year?

    1. I expect Beede to start next season in Sacramento with a possible midseason callup sometime during the season when a need arises at the MLB level.

  2. Wow, what a day for Beede and the Giants. I remember when he was drafted - and correct me if I'm wrong, but the knock was an inability to control his stuff, and diminishing velocity that seemed to portend towards low 90's FBs in the future.

Well, this game made a statement for what The Giants and Beede have done, and the risk/reward the Giants saw in Beede when drafting him down in the first round. Keep it going kid.

Thanks for the write-up Doc, and the running storyline on Tyler Beede all year.

    1. Thanks, Rainball. I've loved the Beede pick from the moment he was drafted. I had him going to the Cubs at #4 and the Giants got him at #15. Schwarber initially made that look like a great call by the Cubs, but they might wish they had drafted Beede now.

    2. I remember that Doc, and I remember getting pretty excited about that as well. The Giants have such a strong presence in understanding the players who have been undervalued and simultaneously have premier pedigree. Really love that strategy, particularly since the Giants have had too much success over the last 6 years to be able to grab "consensus" top-10 picks due to drafting order.

Getting guys like Beede, Shaw, and Arroyo (maybe Bickford falls into that category, too) is just an incredible coup. Hopefully, Quinn/Reynolds/Brusa may prove to be a triplet in the same mould from this year's draft, which I thought was excellent (seeing as I'm also, have always been, and still am a huge fan of the Samardzija signing).

  3. Thanks for the Beede write-up. You think he might get a call up and pitch some innings? Possibly as a reliever in a game that's looking a bit out of control. Or maybe even as a spot starter. (I have my doubts, but I'm curious to what you think.)

    1. I don't expect to see Beede in SF this year, but you never know. He finished the minor league season strong.

Speaking of which, over his last 6 starts, Beede posted a 1.58 ERA with 49 K's in 39.2 IP.

BTW, nice little recent article about OF Bryan Reynolds above - review of his college career & a few videos hitting from both the left and the right side. Nice stuff.
