Game Wrap 8/2/2016: Phillies 13 Giants 8

The Giants may have still been digesting the flurry of trades that went down yesterday.  Kruk and Kuip certainly hinted at some residual ill feelings in the clubhouse.  In any event, Madison Bumgarner had a rare Disaster Start exacerbated by some sloppy fielding, particularly by newcomer Eduardo Nunez at 3B.  The Giants fought to get back in the game, but the bullpen suffered a failure in the 8'th inning and the Phils won going away.  Key Lines:

Angel Pagan- 2 for 5, HR(7).  BA= .284.  Pagan is a dynamic player when he's healthy.

Brandon Crawford-2 for 4 HR(10), BB.  BA= .272.

Brandon Belt- 3 for 5, HR(12).  BA= .287.  Belt's slump had as much to do with the Giants post-All-Star skid as anything.  Maybe he broke out of it tonight?

Eduardo Nunez- 0 for 4, Error.  BA= .292.  Nunez had only made 6 errors in 450 innings before tonight so hopefully this was just one that came at a bad time.

Madison Bumgarner- 5 IP, 10 H, 8 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.25.  Even without the error and unearned runs, this was not a Bumgarner start.  He has not had many disaster starts in his career and he's always come back strong in the past.

Will Smith- 0.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 0 K's.  ERA= 4.42.  In fairness to Smith, the first hit was a squibber to SS that was pure BABIP bad luck and the next one that banged off the RF wall probably would have been caught in AT&T.  On the other hand, Smith had not been putting up strong numbers in Milwaukee for about 15 games before the trade.

Catching up with the roster moves to accommodate the trades:

Mac Willamson goes on the DL with a shoulder strain.

Ehire Adrianza is called up to replace Big Mac on the roster.

Albert Suarez and Matt Reynolds were optioned to Sacramento to make room for Will Smith and Matt Moore.

Jake Peavy moves to the bullpen to make room for Matt Moore in the rotation.

i understand how a team can be affected by losing a player...it happens in most biz...but they gotta put on their big boy pants and just suck it up
in other news, the bums optioned puig. i think many predicted that allowing puig to be puig when he first joined that club was not going to turn out well. looks like they may be forced to trade him during the off season

  2. Bumgarner got two outs following the Nunez' error, then gave up single, single, HR with 2 outs.
The error was ugly, a bobble followed by a hurried wild throw, but a normal Bumgarner pitches through that, no sweat.
If all that wasn't ugly enough, Romo must have been saving up for his miserable performance!
Maybe we can chalk this up to the time zones and weather changes.
