AAA Sacramento River Cats pounded the Reno Aces 12-4:

Josh Osich LHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 2.25.
The big story here continues to be Austin Slater who has just gone OFF! 4 consecutive games with at least 3 hits with 3 doubles and 4 HR's in that span. Batting .500(19 for 38) over his last 10 games. Playing CF. I looked at a couple of videos. Very short, quick swing direct to the ball. Is he putting himself in the conversation for a 25 man roster spot for next year?

Is Slater a true CF or will he have to move to the corners?
ReplyDeleteThose are truly impecible numbers for a CFer, if he can carry them over. His earlier success in AA this season would suggest that this not simple product of AAA fields and hitter-friendly conditions.
Slater: I hope so. We really need some young wheels in the OF. And if he can play CF in the majors, that'd be a plus. Because while Span has been better in CF than Pagan was last year, he's not really a top-flight CFer at this point in his career and think that hip injury took more out of him than I'd hoped.
ReplyDeleteI would say that Slater is probably never going to be a starting CF in MLB, but if he can cover it in a pinch, it increases his value.
DeletePurely due to defense; or based on the hit tool primarily?
DeleteOr are you piecing together that he's a 'tweener - since the bat plays better in CF, but the defense isn't really going to be Starting Quality as an ML CF'er..?
I don't think Slater will ever be more than an adequate defensive CF based on the pattern of his assignments in the minors.
