Game Wrap 8/13/2016: Giants 6 Orioles 2

Madison Bumgarner finally got some run support and knew just what to do with it as the Giants coasted to the Win.  Key Lines:

Denard Span- 2 for 4.  BA= .263.  Both of the hits were 2-out, 2-run singles which have been as scarce as hen's teeth for the Giants lately.  Span's BA over his last 7 games is just .233, but it's .305 over his last 15 and .295 over his last 30. Span said after the game he's always been a second half hitter.

Angel Pagan- 1 for 2, 2B, BB, SB(12).  BA= .288.  Speaking of consistency, Pagan is hitting .347 over his last 10 games, .290 over his last 15 and .286 over his last 30.

Brandon Belt- 1 for 5, HR(14).  BA= .278.  I don't know if this is breaking out of a slump, but Belt has been in one and the Giants desperately need his HR power.  Belt is hitting just .222 over his last 10 games, .235 over his last 15 and .234 over his last 30.

Joe Panik- 3 for 3, 2 2B, BB. BA= .245.  Panik has been in a deep slump ever since getting hit on the helmet by that Matt Moore fastball.  Hopefully this is his breakout from that.  He's another guy the Giants need to get back to his baseline level of performance.

Madison Bumgarner- 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 2.11.  Bumgarner was Bumgarner which is dominant.  Not much more to say about this.  Carl Steward on Giants Extra makes the case for Bum to be the frontrunner for the Cy Young Award which would add $2 M to his team options for each of the last 2 years of his contract.

Derek Law- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 2.00.  Law extends his scoreless appearance streak to 18 games.

Santiago Casilla- 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K's, Save(27).  ERA= 2.76.  Casilla had to come in when Romo and Lopez could not slam the door in the 9'th inning.  Casilla finally got it shut down.  He gets credit for the Save even though he came in with a 4 run lead because there were runners on base.

The Dodgers topped the Pirates so the Giants lead in the NL West remains at 1 game.

Johnny Cueto goes for the Giants second series win in a row today facing lefty Wade Miley.

Carl Steward also reports on a rather lengthy pregame meeting between Bruce Bochy and 4 hitters:  The Brandons, Buster Posey and Joe Panik.  Nobody seems to know what it was about and Boch wasn't talking.  I've always wondered what you say to a a group of slumping players.  I mean, "hey, you guys need to hit better!" seems to be just stating the obvious.  I would think mechanical adjustments would be mostly the Hitting Coach's responsibility and would be more of an individual thing.  It was kind of an odd group:  Pence and Pagan were apparently already on the field when the meeting broke out, so it seems like it was kind of impromptu.  No mention of Span or Nunez or any of the bench hitters.  Since we all know that 2+2=5, I'm going to add it up and say it had something to do with clearing the air from fallout from the Matt Duffy trade, which is something Flannery predicted would eventually need to happen the day after the trade went down.  At the time, Kruk and Kuip strongly hinted at some clubhouse dissatisfaction with the trade too.

  1. The air-clearing sounds reasonable. Obviously we'll never really know. But it sounds reasonable.
