Down on the Farm: AFL Report

Phoenix Desert Dogs topped the Scottsdale Scorpions 4-3:

Gary Brown(LF)- 0 for 4.
Joe Panik(SS)- 1 for 4, SB(1).
Chris Gloor(LHP)-  4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.
Ricky Oropesa appeared as a defensive replacement at 1B.

Gary Brown's hitting struggles continue.  Nice start for Gloor who will be facing top notch hitting competition in the AFL.  Encouraging appearance by Hembree who the Giants could probably use in the pen next year.

  1. I noticed with the Eastern All Starts that Kickham was ahead of Brown. Was that just a listing or is there a changing going on? Truthfully, I would have given up Brown before Joseph, even if the system is clogged with catchers. The old adage, "you can't steal 1B". I guess I expected too much for a first round choice after being spoiled by Bum and Buster...

    1. I have concerns about Brown, but too early to write him off. Let's see what he does in the AFL and what he does in Fresno next year.

  2. The Giants face a hard decision coming up this offseason. Do they sign back Angel Pagan, cause if they do they will have to go with 2-3years and that will leave Brown blocked (I just dont see him as a corner OF cause of the lack of power, also diminishes his value) or do they really trust Gary Brown and think that this not so good year was due to the Eastern League.

I think Mike Kickham stock has raised a lot this year due to the fact that he skipped A+ and completely dominated AA for most part of the season. especially in the 2nd half

DrB, do you think Kickham can reach the bigs next year?

    1. I think Kickham starts in Fresno and could be ready to move up to the majors by mid-season.

    2. Oh yeah, the Giants have always taken care of the present first and worried about the future when it comes. I haven't always agreed with that approach but it's been successful.

  3. I think we sign Pagan and move him to Left that way Brown and Play center if he proves he is ready.

  4. I think they've done an amazing job at developing the future of our pitching, both in the pen and starters. Btwn the guys at A, and AA, we are set and can really manage issues like Timmy's expiring contract, replacing Vogey when he comes up, etc.. As for position players, we now have 4 of our five starters in the infield who are young. We have a couple buys on the corners, and we have depth at Catcher even without Joseph. Panik may have found his groove which fills the hole.

We have issues in the OF, but hopefully that can be addressed by some of our younger guys.

  5. I don't know much about AFL, but for Panik and Brown, this is their second go around. Is that postive, neutral or negative for them, and for the team (as in, did we not have more players emerge for AFL over the past 12 months)?

I am not sure how to view it.

    1. I'd say neutral. The AFL is a showcase league and also a place organizations send players who need to work on something specific or need extra work due to time missed from injury or just to get extra AB's for development purposes. I would not look at is a any particular level in the sense that younger is better or repeating it is bad. Buster Posey had a terrible AFL. What did that tell us about his future?
