Down on the Farm: 08-31-2010

AAA Salt Lake City Bees stung the Fresno Grizzlies 7-6 in 10 innings:

Eugenio Velez- 2 for 5. BA= .297.
Jesus Guzman- 2 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .316.
Brandon Belt- 1 for 2, HR(3), 3 BB. BA= .240.
Brett Pill- 3 for 5, SB(7). BA= .271.
Tyler Graham- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .349.
Henry Sosa- 6.2 IP, 11 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.97.

You know, I'd really like to know what Brandon Belt's vision measures out at. The kid just doesn't seem to swing at anything he can't hit, or is out of the zone. Sosa gave up some hits, but good to see him not give up any walks.

AA Erie Sea Dogs topped the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-2:

Pretty much nothing to see here.

High A San Jose Giants pounded the Inland Empire 66'ers 10-4:

Ehire Adrianza- 0 for 2, 2 BB. BA= .250.
Juan Perez- 3 for 5, 3B. BA= .300.
Michael Sandoval- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .266.
Drew Biery- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(8). BA= .249.
Wendell Fairley- 2 for 4, 3B, 2 SB(10). BA= .296.
Justin Fitzgerald- 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K's ERA= 3.51.

Did somebody light a fire under Wendell Fairley here at the end of the season. He's finally flashing both power and speed! Nice start for Fitz.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets beat the Lakewood Blueclaws 6-2:

Nick Liles- 2 for 5. BA= .313.
Chris Dominguez- 4 for 4, 2B, 3B. BA= .269.
Skyler Stromsmoe- 1 for 5, 3 SB(6). BA= .229.
Andy Reichard- 5.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 3.49.
Jose Valdez- 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.41.
Jose Casilla= 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 1.20.

Good to see Dominguez get a lot of non-HR basehits.

Short Season Eugene Emeralds topped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 4-1:

Nothing to see here.

Rookie AZL Giants season ended last night with the playoff loss to the Reds. Brewers won the Championship with a 10-8 win over the Reds tonight. Nice season for the AZL Giants though, making the playoffs once again.

DSL Giants lost game 2 of the Championship series to the Reds 13-3:

Leonardo Fuentes- 3 for 4.
Danny Mujica- 0 for 0, 5 BB!, SB.
Marvin Barrios- 3 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 1 K.

  1. Looks like Belt has adjusted to AAA pitching, too bad we don't have space to bring him up, but if he continues hitting like this to the end of the season, perhaps the Giants might DFA someone (Pucetas?) in order to bring him up, particularly since Dontrelle, who they were going to bring up, might be having problems.

Well, Fairley is still only 21 (or is it 22?) so maybe he's finally figuring things out, he's been a little young for the leagues he's been playing in, right? And his maturity is definitely been lower than others so it could be that he needs more time to reach his potential, what do you think?

Would have to check, but wasn't the Salem-Keizer game marked by Gary Brown's debut?

  2. You are right about Gary Brown.

I wouldn't give up on Fairley, but the competition for OF spots in the organization is going to be a lot more crowded than in the past.

  3. Hello DrB, just a question regarding the future ss/2nd base on the giant team. Would you prefer Adrianza /Noonnan or Flores/Culberson ?

  4. Assuming they all reach their full potential, I believe Adrianza/Noonan have a much higher ceiling due to their athleticism. Culberson may have the most power though.

  5. Thank you for the answer.

So no love for Flores ? Looking at his stats (and only his stats, sorry I am living overseas), it look like a prospect making steady progress each year. The thing is, he 's never in the discussion regarding the giant minor league short stop depth chart. Even the MILB site has him at a DH. Did you have a chance to see him the position? Is he a butcher there?

NB : Dr B, I have to thank you for all the good stuff you have put on the MLB Giant site and now here. Back to 2003 and thank to the internet, Prospecthounds and you were the first to give me another way to love this organization by following our prospects from beginning until they make it to the show.

Even if I can't see them playing, it's really nice too know how they are developing their skills.

    One more time thank you.

  6. Thank you. The thing about Flores is he really hasn't shown anything before this year. I've seen him in 3 SJ games this year. Just not impressed with his build/appearance. Of course, I'm not a scout, I've been wrong many times, and this could be his breakout year. I have to say that putting all the info together, Adrianza, Noonan and Culberson are way ahead of him on any top prospect list.
