This one was a real nail biter with the bullpen holding the forces of evil at bay until the Giants could finally cash in on one of their many scoring opportunities of the night. Not exactly a must win, but a much needed one. Key lines:
Andres Torres- 2 for 5, 2B(36), BB. BA= .291. I'm starting to think if the Giants make the playoffs, this guy should get some MVP consideration....for the NL!
Edgar Renteria- 2 for 6. BA= .275. Rent scored two of the Giants 4 runs.
Buster Posey- 1 for 5, 2B, BB. BA= .339. Buster got the Giants first run on the board with a ground rule double that hopped the left-centerfield fence.
Pat Burrell- 2 for 3, 2 2B, 2 BB, SF. BA= .258. Pat "The Bat" is on fire right now. Getting great AB's and driving the ball.
Travis Ishikawa- 2 for 3, BB, S. BA= .303. The Giants drew a total of 11 walks. Add in 11 hits and they only scored 4 runs?.....in extra innings? For the second time this season, Travis was called out at home plate while trying to score the winning run. This time, he was really out, but only by an inch as his hand couldn't quite touch home plate.
Madison Bumgarner- 5.2 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.36. Bum got off to a rocky start giving up 2 runs in the first inning. I had a bad feeling about the game at that point. He ended up 1 out short of a quality start, so give the kid props for hanging in there.
Bullpen- 5.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K's. The bullpen was nails, once again, and the new guys are a big part of it.
With the W, gain a half game on the idle Padres to 1.5 games back. Colorado and LA were also idle as they remain 6.5 and 7 games back respectively. Arizona downed the Brewcrew 7-4 and are 21.5 games behind in last place. In the Wild Card race, the Phillies were idle to fall to 1 game behind the Giants and tied with St Louis who beat Cincy 7-3.
Tim Lincecum tries to keep it going tonight against the Cubbies and Ryan Dempster in what promised to be another tough, low scoring game.
