Down on the Farm: 08-22-2010

AAA Fresno Grizzlies out hit the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 10-7:

Emmanuel Burriss- 2 for 5, SF, SB(9). BA= .292
Eugenio Velez- 3 for 4, 2 BB. BA= .313.
Jesus Guzman- 3 for 5, 2B. BA= .307.
Tyler Graham- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .342.
Dontrelle Willis- 1 for 1, 3B. BA= 1.000.

Dontrelle Willis- 1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, HBP. ERA= 9.00.

I think OGC mentioned this once before, but I wonder what would happen if Emmanuel Burriss had a man-to-man talk with Andres Torres about hitting philosophy? Velez seems to be working on taking more walks. I really like this guy and hope he finds his way back to the majors someday. Dude sometimes got a bit out of control, but I almost like that better than the statues they are running out there right now. Dontrelle Willis needs to seriously consider taking up hitting full time a la Rick Ankiel!

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels blanked the Bowie Baysox 4-0:

Thomas Neal- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .294.
Brandon Belt- 2 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .323.
Conor Gillaspie- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .295.
Felix Romero- 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 3.40.
Andy Sisco- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 4.91.

Neal, Belt and Gillaspie finishing strong. Sisco has been maddeningly inconsistent. Tonight he was dominant.

HIgh A San Jose Giants dumped the Stockton Ports 7-1:

Francisco Peguero- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .317.
Johnny Monell- 2 for 4, HR(17). BA= .270.
Ehire Adrianza- 1 for 4, HR(2). BA= .253.
James Simmons- 2 for 2, 2B, BB. BA= .253.
Jorge Bucardo- 5 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 8/2. ERA= 3.81.

Monell is hitting .370 over his last 10 games. Simmons has a line of .355/.500/.724 over his last 10 games. He is my pick for most athletic player on the team. I'm tellin' ya. If Simmons ever hits consistently, he's the complete package. After a dominant first Cal League start, Bucardo has scuffled a bit.

Low A Lexington Legends defeated the Augusta Greenjackets 8-2:

Chris Dominguez- 3 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .267.
Chris Heston- 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.84.

Dominguez is drawing a walk here and there. All in all, I think his season has been somewhat encouraging as I thought there was a real possibility that he might hit about .220 or less. He did commit his 30'th error of the season, but BA voted him the best defensive 3B prospect in the Sally League.

Short Season Yakima Bears topped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 5-3:

Raynor Campbell- 2 for 4. BA= .264.
Jose Medina- 0 for 1, 3 BB. BA= .245.
Shawn Sanford- 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 2.32.

This was Sanford's first professional start after notching 4 Saves for S-K this year and 8 for AZL Giants last year. His ERA is 1.74 over his last 10 appearances. He has a K/9 of 9 and a GO/AO= 2.33.

Rookie AZL Cubs beat the Giants 7-5:

Carlos Willoughby- 2 for 5. BA= .306.
Joe Staley- 1 for 4, HR(4). BA= .239.
Sundrendy Windster- 1 for 3, 2B. BA= .316.

Gaspar Santiago- 2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.63.
Rafael Martinez- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.00.
Mike Kickham- 0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 13.50.
Brandon Allen- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 6.00.
Matt Graham- 1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 7.11.

The Giants seem to be taking tandem starting to an extreme and just sort of throwing people out there at random for stints of 3 IP or less, almost like holding tryouts.

DSL was idle. In fact, it looks like the DSL regular season is over. The Giants won their division by 2 games. There will be a 3 game playoff Aug. 27-29. Not sure who against. There seem to be 5 divisions in the DSL.

  1. Quick conversation on Dominguez...

I have a good gut with him, I always heard that he did not project well at 3B, and that he would likely move across the diamond if he were ever REALLY going to make it to the Majors (I think I heard him loosely compared to Pujols in this regard). Looking at his error count has never dissuaded me from that thought process. However, now you say he is highly regarded defensively. Interesting info...

Also, is he considered a high-ish prospect in the org? He is old for his level, and he still has big holes in his game. I have been excited about him since he was drafted, and he has put together a coule decent-ish seasons, but then I see his age and wonder if there is really any reason to be hopeful at all (23 for A- may not be OLD, but it certainly isn't high-prospect territory).

  2. I think Dominguez is still a high risk/high reward prospect. He obviously is not going to be one of those HOF type prospects that hits the majors at age 21 and never looks back. If he keeps his head above water at each level, accumulates enough quality AB's to learn and close the holes in his swing, I think he can be a guy who eventually gives you 5 or 6 seasons of a .260 BA with 30+ HR's. On the other hand, I could easily see him hitting .189 in AA and we never hear from him again. I thought there was a possibility that could happen this year in Low A, but he's managed to keep himself alive to fight another day.

  3. I agree totally on James Simmons, Doc. When I took a trip to see the Greenjackets in 2008, Simmons and Peguero were the 2 guys who most "looked the part" of a professional athlete, although Peguero was a bit skinny. As you said, if Simmons tightens up his hitting, he could really come on fast.

It's encouraging to hear about Dominguez's defense. I say we let him stay at 3B as long as possible. And the same with Tommy Joseph - he needs to stay at catcher at least another 2 years (unless he's just horrible, of course). There's plenty of time to make a change later.

  4. Don't recall if I did, but I agree with you that Burriss and Torres should talk, sounds like Burriss is having the same problem Torres had, taught to slap the ball, with no power, to take advantage of his speed. You inspired me to tweet that to some people, maybe the message will make its way to Burriss or Torres...

BA noted Dominguez's "lack of range and agility" at 3B, so it is surprising to hear of him being voted best defensive by BA. If he has improved that much, then I'm really encouraged by his progress, the will to become good at defense will bode well going forward I think.

But yeah, 23 is old for top prospects, as DrB said. But if he can rise a level per season, he'll be in the majors at 27, which is not bad, he can still provide plenty of value to a MLB team at that age, he could be a fine complementary player.
