The Giants have pulled themselves away from the brink several times this year. Only time will tell if tonight was the start of another self-rescue, but the Giants needed this one badly. Jonathan Sanchez pulled himself together at an unlikely time and pitched a very good, if not great game. The offense had a veritable explosion of runs, as Giants offensive explosions go. The result was a win they had to have. Key lines:
Freddy Sanchez- 2 for 4. BA= .261. Nice game by Freddy. Hope this is the start of more of these.
Buster Posey- 2 for 4, 2 2B. Man this kid just keeps on impressing and impressing!
Jose Guillen- 2 for 4. BA= .261. Guillen is 7 for 15 with a dinger since the trade.
Pablo Sandoval- 1 for 4, HR(9). BA= .266. Pablo is hitting .290 with 3 dingers in his last 10 games.
Jonathan Sanchez- 8 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 3.47. What's maddening is that Sanchez appears to have the talent to pitch like this on a regular basis. Maybe this will be the start of a run? The Giants desperately need someone to step up right now. Sanchez did tonight.
The Padres kept right on winning, 5-3 over the Cubbies for a 4 game sweep. The Giants were only able to keep pace at 6 games behind. In beating the Phillies, the Giants pulled up to 1 game behind them for the Wild Card berth. St. Louis was idle, falling 1 full game behind the Giants.
The Giants now move on the St Louis for 3 games against Wild Card rival Cardinals with Madison Bumgarner taking the hill vs Jake Westbrook, a game the Giants should win.

I'm inclined to think that Westbrook, a sinkerball pitcher, is the kind of guy that the Giants will have all sorts of trouble with.
ReplyDeleteThat is a very good possibility. He's kind of a Derek Lowe kind of pitcher.
