Down on the Farm: 08-03-2010

AAA Colorado Springs Skysox defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 6-1:

Emmanuel Burriss- 1 for 3, 2B, BB. BA- .303.
Daryl Maday- 4 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 9.21
Craig Whitaker- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 1.42.

A bit of a rough transition to AAA for Maday. Too many walks seems to be a trend throughout the organization. Is it possible that it's an organizational philosophy to not give into batters, 3 walks is better than 1 HR?

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels got past the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 4-2 in 10 innings:

Darren Ford- 3 for 5, 3B, SB(30). BA= .251.
Brandon Belt- 1 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .340.
Thomas Neal- 0 for 3, SF, OF Assist. BA= .289.
Craig Westcott- 4.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.82.
David Quinowski- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.

I believe this is Q's first AA appearance in his career. Neal wins games with situational hitting and his arm too.

High A San Jose Giants edged the Stockton Ports 5-4:

Ehire Adrianza- 2 for 3, SB(25). BA= .251.
Jason Stoffel- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 5.26.

Adrianza had the only multihit game for the Giants and they had no XBH's. Nice inning for Stoffel.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets outlasted the Charleston River Dogs 5-4 in 15 innings:

Chris Dominguez- 1 for 5, HR(16), 2 BB. BA= .263.
Hector Sanchez- 3 for 6, HR(5). BA= .284.
Andy Reichard- 7 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 3.67.
Zack Wheeler- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.33.
Chris Gloor- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.45.

Hector Sanchez is quietly having a good season, hitting .316 over his last 10 games. Looks like Reichard may have pitched into some bad luck in this one, but he's old for this level. Time is running out for him. Yeah! Wheeler goes 2 innings!

Short Season Spokane Indians blanked the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 5-0:

Kevin Couture- 5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.65.

The Volcanoes offense is pretty much dormant.

Rookie AZL Giants beat the Angels 5-1:

Sundrendy Windster- 2 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .348.
Rafael Rodriguez- 2 for 5. BA= .264.
Charlie Jones- 2 for 4. BA= .263.
Justin Schumer- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.
Jake Dunnington- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.51.

Good to see the high ceiling guys in the highlights.

DSL Giants topped the Orioles 9-7:

Gabe Cornier- 3 for 5. BA= .284.
Jesus Galindo- 2 for 5, SB(38). BA= .234.
Jorge Lopez- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .220.
Cesar Soto- 3 for 4, BB. BA= .185.

  1. We need to find out why Wheeler is only pitching 1-2 innings at a time rather than starting and stretching out his arm. Or is that why, because he's missed so much time that they want to inch him along in usage?

  2. Hmm, did a quickie research and while I did not find anything conclusive, what I found was an article from when he pitched in the Futures game, which was not that long ago: http://www.examiner.com/x-50352-Augusta-Sports-Examiner~y2010m7d10-Augusta-GreenJackets-pitcher-headed-to-Anaheim-for-XM-Radio-AllStar-Futures-Game

In it, he noted that the torn nail that forced him on the DL earlier was not healed yet: “The finger feels good. It’s not one hundred percent, but it’s getting better.” So I guess it is still not fully healed yet and they don't want to rush it.

  3. Say, just realized, you're a Doctor.

Wheeler's torn nail happened in May. In mid-July it was still not 100%, and now early August and appears to still not be 100%, though maybe better since he went 2 IP. Is it normal to take so long for a nail to heal?

I lost a toe nail once busting a blood vessel under it, and it eventually fell off, do you think something like that might have happened to Wheeler? That was painful for a long time, though I don't recall how long, that was nearly 30 years ago. And what I mean is that the tear caused the nail to fall off, extending the healing time.

  4. Do you think Whitaker might actually get a cup of coffee this year?

  5. OGC,

I'm not a sports medicine specialist by any stretch, so I can't really say how long it would take a torn fingernail to heal. If you are talking about healing the wound, it shouldn't take longer than 4-6 weeks max. If you are talking about growing the nail back out to full length/trim, I can see how it might take longer.

I believe there was recently a fairly prominent MLB pitcher who lost the better part of a season with the same injury.

My big concern would be why did it happen in the first place and how do you keep it from happening again?

Celgin: I think Whitaker is moving way up the depth chart. As a former supplemental round draft pick, I have to think the Giants are still going to give him a chance or else try make him tradable.

  6. Definitely, DrB, why and hot to prevent again are most important.

Didn't expect you to be sports medicine, but what you provided is exactly what I was hoping for.

FYI, Baggerly reported player Giants close to trading for was Aardsma, for two prospects, with Adrianza on the list, but no Belt. He also thinks Belt giving same buzz as Runzler, so could see Sept callup.

So, apparently, Adrianza is no longer considered a keeper, he was on their trade list, but Belt is securely on the keeper list (no surprise, but good to get confirmation)

From my view, just based on how Belt has jumped to AA and continued mashing, it reminds me of Pablo's rise in 2008.

  7. er, how not hot, I just don't function well early in morning...

  8. I don't know if Adrianza knew he was on the block and was feeling some heat, but he looked terrible in the recent game I saw in San Bernardino. This was after I was impressed by him about a month ago down in Lake Elsinore. It looked like there were a few scouts behind home plate in the San Berdoo game. Maybe that's why the deal fell through?

  9. That sounds logical.

Looking at his numbers, he's just being fooled at this level too much, but he's not too far off and he's only 20, plus still walks a lot. And he has been improving month by month in his K-rate and walk rate. But his main problem is popping up way too many pitches. He appears to be trying to find balance. Probably will repeat San Jose in 2011, but there are slight signs of improvement.

But as you know, it is a long way from Advanced A ball to the majors, so we will see how that goes. In any case, his prospect star is certainly tarnished.

OT: FWIW, I happened to go surfing into the MLB Giants board (searching for info on Wheeler) and, boy!, I totally understand why you stopped going there. My brain almost blew a fuse reading through that stuff. Luckily, though, that resulted in you creating your blog! Keep up the great work!
