Down on the Farm: 08-19-2010

AAA Omaha Royals topped the Fresno Grizzlies 6-5:

Emmanuel Burriss- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .291.
Eugenio Velez- 2 for 5, 3 SB(28). BA=.306.
Ryan Rohlinger- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(8), BB. BA= .298.
Tony Pena- 1 for 3, 3B. BA= .286.
Kevin Pucetas- 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 6.06.
Dan Runzler- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.

Burriss played 2B and Pena played SS. Is Pena just filling in, or is he in the mix for the Giants MLB job next year? Is Velez getting more accomplished at SB's?

AA New Britain Rock Cats edged the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-6:

Darren Ford- 1 for 4, HR(5), BB. BA= .250.
Thomas Neal- 2 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .293.
Brandon Belt- 1 for 4, HR(8), BB. BA= .325.
Conor Gillaspie- 3 for 4, 2 2B, SF. BA= .292.
Clay Timpner- 3 for 5. BA= .294.
Carlos Zambrano- 2 for 3, 2 S. BA= .667.
Clayton Tanner- 3 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 K. ERA= 3.44.

High A San Jose Giants out hit the Visalia Rawhide 9-6:

Francisco Peguero- 2 for 5. BA= .316.
Jose Flores- 3 for 5. BA= .329.
Johnny Monell- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .266.
Ehire Adrianza- 3 for 5, 2 2B, 2 SB(28). BA= .253.
James Simmons- 2 for 4, 3B, BB. BA= .248.
Kyle Woodruff- 6 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 2.98.
Ryan Verdugo- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 2.05.

Big game for Adrianza. Verdugo is a LHP whose fastball gets into the low 90's.

Low A Savannah Sand Gnats blanked the Augusta Greenjackets 3-0:

Nick Liles- 2 for 3, 2B
Andy Reichard- 7.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.54.

Liles had 2 of the 'Jackets 3 hits. Pretty good game for Reichard.

Short Season The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes and the NWL were idle.

Rookie AZL Giants topped the Dodgers 3-1:

Joe Staley- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .241.
Jose De La Cruz- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .272.
Austin Fleet- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 2.63.
Jake Dunnington- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 0.69.
Heath Hembree- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 1.13.

Fleet needs to pitch at higher levels to draw any real conclusions but he's been dominant in the AZL. Dunnington looks like a promising FA signing out of HS. Hembree must be on the closer track all the way.

DSL Giants downed the Orioles 7-2:

Danny Mujica- 2 for 5, 3B, SB(20). BA= .222.
Jorge Lopez- 2 for 5. SB(7). BA= .243.
Alberto Robles- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(20). BA= .272.
Luis Vasquez- 3 for 5. BA= .289.
Jesus Galindo- 2 for 3. BA= .255.
Victor Feliz- 1 for 3, 2 BB, 2 SB(9). BA= .303.
Ariel Hernandez- 5.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.01.
Jose Reyes- 3.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.60.

  1. Totally unrelated to this post, but...

I was reviewing the list of draftees that the Giants signed, and Alec Asher was on the list of players NOT signed. Is that an inaccuracy in the lists that I am looking at (from BA), or did it turn out that the email you received was a forgery?

  2. According to thread in MCC - http://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2010/8/16/1626297/draft-signing-deadline-thread-not - he failed his physical and the Giants rescinded the deal.

  3. E-mail I received? I've never reported receiving an e-mail about Alec Asher. Wasn't that Fla-Giant?

  4. Was that Fla-Giant? Sorry, I thought you were the one who reported that...

    My bad...

  5. Looks like Caleb Hougesen and Brett Krill were the last two signings. Hougesen is a HS two way player who the Giants drafted as a 3B. Fla-Giant is pretty high on him. Can't hurt to have another high ceiling HS draftee in the fold. I like the Krill signing too. He may be the longest of longshots, but he has some potential. I really like his size, 6'4" 215 lbs, and athleticism, a bit bulky but runs surprisingly well for his size. When he makes contact, he bat makes a loud noise. Making contact will be the big issue with him.

  6. The Giants draft got panned by fangraphs. I'd like to rebut that a bit with a couple of points:

    1. Fangraphs is the champion of advanced defensive metrics. By all appearances, Brown and Parker should be excellent defenders in the OF with a ton of range. If Brown is what the scouting reports say he is, he should be a 2 WAR player even if he's replacement level with the bat, and it seem improbable that he won't be better than that. That's really very good value for a team that is drafting at #24. It seems like every one is hung up on Brown's walk rate, but as OGC has pointed out many times, there is no reason at all to be drawing walks if you can hit .438. Brown has drawn his share of walks in the past. He will likely do so again when he needs to.

    2. The Fangraphs review failed to even mention Chuckie Jones who is doing very well as a just-turned-18 year old in the AZL. Heck, he's even drawing walks!!

  7. I am excited about Jones. I wonder if there is ANY chance he starts in SJ next year. I suspect he will stay in AZ, then go to Augusta with an eye on him for potential SJ advancement. I would even be OK with keeping him in extended ST and just put him back in AZL or Salem-Kaizer next year...

I do think that SJ will be Latin-heavy next year, though. I think there is a good chance that Sundster, Willoughby and RafRod all start in A+. Both Sundster and Willoughby have been putting up good numbers for a couple years now, and they are now both listed at 21. Not sure why they havent been pushed harder to this point.

I would not be surprised to see Sanchez repeat A-. He had a disappointing year for the promise he was showing. Plus, he is in direct competition with ToJo and Posey.

  8. The usual progression is that guys in Salem-Keizer and Augusta get promoted to San Jose and guys from AZL go to Augusta or S-K, although more and more S-K guys go to Augusta.

I'd like to see Willoughby in San Jose though. I'm pretty sure we'll see Tommy Joseph there too. I'll say RafRod goes to Augusta along with Jones and Windster. That pretty much fills out Augusta's OF right there.

I'm thinking pretty much the whole Augusta team will go to San Jose leaving the S-K and AZL players to fight it out over Augusta roster spots. The Giants do have a crowd in the lower minors, don't they?
